19715662New York: Ashley Books 1971. First Edition First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 6 1/4 X 9 1/2 Inches. 278 PP. Stated "First Edition" on the copyright page. Original price of $8.95 intact on front flap. An often overlooked classic that obviously influenced chef Jamie Oliver. Written by Penelope Ashe AKA Billie Young of "Naked Came the Stranger" fame. For those who forget "Naked Came the Stranger" was the trashy 1969 novel pieced together from 24 submissions by Newsday columnist Mike McGrady. McGrady set out to publish a book that was intentionally horrible but filled with lots of sex. His intention was to prove that American readership no longer recognized good writing and just cared about folks getting naked. He was right. The book a hoax was published and became a 1969 bestseller. Penelope Ashe Billie Young was represented as the author for meetings with publishers etc. In fact Young was McGrady's sister-in-law. Ever the entreprenuer she parlayed that "fake fame" into this genuinely fine cookbook.

Includes recipes that include: Adulteress Rice Pilaf Erotic Viking Steamers Spicy Casanova Shimp and Conjugal Clam Chowder among others. Light wear to top edge and foot of DJ spine. Ashley Books hardcover

The first group of recipes includes instructions for such confections as Cranberry Sponge Cake Cider Sherbet Macaroon Pie Spagetti sic Sauce and Bran Refrigerator Rolls. Mixed through the other recipes there are instructions for Crunchy Potato Chip Cookies Apple Cheese Cake Parmesan Veal Frozen Pumpkin Pie and Corn Flake Crust. Several of the recipes emphasize the use of popular Minnesota fruits including Apple Quince Grapes and others. The importance of refrigeration was also emphasized in the “Cooking School†and Model Kitchens with instructions on temperatures needed for home rangers and refrigerators for cooked foods meats butter opened jelly or preserves cheeses and more. The Northern States Power Co. was based out of Minneapolis MN and extended across Minnesota Michigan into the Dakotas and operated an extensive Home Service Dept. The Federal Public Service Corporation of Minnesota appears to have been one of the short-lived outgrowths of WPA and PWA-sponsored programs under the New Deal. Coonawarra is region that has a singular story based on a unique cigar-shaped strip of terra rossa soil over limestone. Established as a 'fruit colony' in the 1880s the region provided grapes for many of the great wines of the early 20th century. After a long period of significant decline the region became known for quality wine again after David Wynn established Wynns Coonawarra Estate in 1951. Through the second half of the 20th century Coonawarra and particularly Coonawarra Cabernet was one of the most sought after wines and wine regions in Australia. Older vintages of Wynns 'Black Label' and 'Red Stripe' hold a special place in Australian wine lovers' cellars and hearts.

Over the years David Wynn engaged a number of artists and writers such as Tate Adams and Walter James to record and celebrate the Coonawarra region and Wynns Coonawarra Estate.

An excellent copy and a significant work in the canon of Australian wine literature and art.

§ OCLC only records 5 copies outside of Australia; 4 in the USA Sonoma UCLA Penn State and Carleton
§ Gabler G7040.

Lyre Bird Press unknown
