Late 1800's cookbook/trade catalogue putting forth the favorable qualities of the "vapor stove" made by The Standard Lighting Co. Vapor stoves burned multiple fuels stove gasoline kerosene or distillate with the advantage of quicker cooking times and less heat then coal or wood. The disadvantage of these stoves were the tendency to explode into giant fireballs of ignited gasoline vapor that could and would incinerate the entire house. 20 pages of illustrations accompanied by a cookbook teeming with recipes. Article on cooking extracted from Volume 42 of Johann Georg Krunitz's Oeconomische Encyklopaedie. The plates depict distilling equipment large-scale stoves double-boilers pots and pans pressing equipment and others. The first 73 volumes of this massive work originally appeared in Berlin 1793-1798. Krunitz was born in Berlin and studied at Gottingen Halle and Frankfurt where he took his doctorate in medicine in 1749 and initially practiced. The winning slogan used to hawk this product: Vigoral. is not a medicine: it is a food that is both MEAT and Drink. Endorsements include - Charles W. Miller Bicyclist who in 1897 covered 2007 miles and 4 laps to win the six-day bicycle race held at Madison Square Garden during the first week in December. Recipes and illustrations. Dinner featured Chowder Baked Mackerel with Tomato Sauce Fried Eels - Jewish style Saratoga Chips Clam Fritters Soft Shell Crabs Quahogs Indian Pudding Ice Cream Watermelon & Peaches and Ponham Spring Water. Also noted the 1891 Executive Committee and the Providence Warren & Bristol Train schedules. <br /> <br />A private club with a membership of 200 shareholders opened in 1867 as a place for gentlemen to network over shore dinners of lobster steamed clams corn and potatoes. The club grounds included a ball field miniature clock and obstacle golf courses bowling alleys and it's own wharf. This area in Providence known as "Riverside" hosted the Crescent Park Amusement Park known as the "Coney Island of the East". Along the Providence River west of the club is the Ponham Lighthouse which is still standing today. The club closed in 1954 and the property was redeveloped for condominiums in the 1980's. This menuwritten by Halliwell a local master of ceremonies and freemason was made to accommodate and service the 3rd and 4th battalions' officers of the West Riding Regiment formerly known as the Duke of Wellington's Regiment. The officers were lodged in the De Grey Rooms neo-classically designed and constructed by architect George Townsend Andrews in the 1840's. The building was originally built to house the Yorkshire Hussar Regiment. The menu describes breakfast luncheon and dinner with served dishes that include tea coffee bacon and eggs kidneys cakes salad soups sweets ices and more. Menu also informs the officers of prices to pay per diem for services and the charges the guests and live-in servants must pay for board and food. The second page lists the sums for individual drinks. Delightful acquisition for a connoisseur of English military history. Light fold marks with some toning. <br/><br/> unknown books

With social changes stirring in India the Colonel's directives furnished to local staff to create the Victorian haute cuisine desired by the Anglo-Indian elite illustrate the transformations occurring throughout the British empire. Chapters cover every aspect of the kitchen the storeroom model menus and of course curries. This edition the sixth contains all preceding prefaces illustrating the changes in taste and style during the mid to later 1800's in Anglo-Indian culture. Hinges cracked but holding. This charming periodical features six sheets of cooking instructions detailing: Fish-Soup; Meat; Sauces-salads; Vegetables; Pastry; Sweets and Preserves; and How to Make Bread. The binding style and large type set likely indicates that this publication was meant for display in the kitchen. The inside cover purports the benefits of a healthy diet especially focused on wheat and grain's positive effects on the brain. The following pages outline recipes and instructions for proper food preparation taking care to mention the repercussions of poorly tended food ranging from indigestion from unchopped capers to dangers of under or overcooked vegetables. The final page includes helpful hints for food shopping health and safety suggestions as well as a treatise on the proper diet for invalids. <br />The Home Magazine a monthly illustrated periodical ran from 1888 to 1908 serving as a guide to social domestic and business life. Mrs. John A Logan served as editor for the Home Magazine following the death of her husband a Civil War general and statesman John A. Logan. Born Mary Simmerson Cunningham an educated woman from Missouri she played an active role in her husband's political life accompanying him on campaigns and organizing volunteers. Mary became a prominent figure in Washington society in her own right often meeting with Adele Douglas wife of Senator Stephen A. Douglas and Julia Dent Grant wife of Ulysses S. Grant to discuss political happenings and social issues. Mary was a celebrated American writer and editor authoring two books and contributing to several publications including William Randolph Hearst's monthly syndicate Cosmopolitan. She was committed to social causes dedicating herself to the women's suffrage movement and was an early supporter of the American Red Cross.
