Binding residue along spine a handful of pencil notes otherwise very good or better. The sale consisted of well over 123 lots including lettered lots some of the more important with commentary. The lots were sold at the direction of the executors of Judge Hilton's estate and overseen by Du Vivier & Co. Hilton is best remembered for his profitable association with Alexander Stewart and for his 1500 acre estate in Saratoga Springs known at its height as Woodlawn Park. Not recorded in OCLC. The first volume of a pioneer American health journal published from 1829-33. It features a selection of fascinating perspectives on medicine including analyses of the effects on health of headwear wine and malt liquor consumption mealtimes and water drinking among other things as well as considerations of race and longevity quacks mothering and more. On tobacco: "'A Victim of the Weed' is desirous of knowing whether he can at once abandon his pipe and segars or must part company in a gradual manner. Our advice is to desist immediately and entirely from the use of tobacco in every form and in any quantity however small" 220. On race: "The differences in this respect are primitive in the different races; the mucous body or varnish which constitutes the layer between the true skin beneath and the outer covering or cuticle being white or nearly so in the European or Caucasian races; yellowish in the Mongul or African; and black in the African" 146. On the education of girls: "Under twelve years of age it should be an invariable rule that the hours of close application should never exceed those of amusement and exercise" 267. Three plates: Frontispiece confectioner's laboratory and 2 plates illustrating kitchen utensils and motifs/decorations. The author the widow of a renowned pastry chef opened her shop in Berlin at the end of the 18th century and was able to establish herself as a refined pastry chef later moving her establishment to Paris. The book contains recipes and advice on how to make jams marmalades and various preserves. Instructions on distillation and the composition of liqueurs and creams. Also includes how to prepare chocolate coffee tea syrups lemonade punch ice cream and sorbets. With marbled boards end papers and edges this French recipe book has some rubbing and wear to the edges with a 1 cm. loss to the tail of the spine. Contemporary to Louis Pasteur Jules Salleron established a Parisian company specializing in oenological precision instrumentation developing an acetimeter followed by his renown ebulliometer still used today. Joined in the 1880s by Jules Dujardin the company grew and continues to operate today. This pictorial broadside illustrates their oenological analysis laboratory and promotes their business to a Spanish-speaking clientele. On heavy cream stock printed in red and blue. Original metal mounting bars affixed to top and bottom edges. Small bend and slight creasing on lower edge with 3.5 cm tear along lower mount and 2 cm to the upper mount; some light wear and soiling otherwise very good condition. Receipts for four simultaneous purchases of wine from the Bordeaux wine merchant Maison Clossman each for delivery to a different palace of Emperor Napoleon III: Palais des Tuileries Palais de L'Elysée Palais de St. Cloud Palais de Fontainebleau. The items are numbered across the four invoices in consecutive order with one hundred seven items in all. A total of one hundred seven items most large quantities in barrels or cartons of fifty bottles each. The fourth and final invoice contains an additional stamp in green ink "Maison de ill.
