A concise example commercial lobbying literature published in order to influence opinion within the House of Commons issued in opposition to a proposed bill for lay further duties on 'mixed or compound spirits' that they suggest would 'be a great loss and prejudice to the Maltsters in general especially to those persons making of malt in Surrey and Middlesex for the use of the brewers and private families only'. The short document implores the House to allow time should the bill pass for the maltsters of these two counties to dispose of their product that they might avoid ruination due to the likely decline in demand from distilleries whose production would no doubt decrease as a result of increased financial strain. Frustratingly this document as is common with lobbying literature of the era is undated. ESTC suggests 1730 as a date; but we could not locate the parliamentary proceedings if any to which it might relate.
