The restaurant opened in 1907 - 110 years ago according to the Savoy Tivoli's Facebook page. This menu is quite limited could be one of the first menus offered. Dinner specials are 75 cents and includes an appetizer salad and soup entree and dessert with coffee. unknown books

Wine list is coated in black ink to the outer wrappers printed in a silvery-gray with illustration of a falcon to upper wrapper. Internally the wine list is printed in black ink. Both pieces of ephemera are loose leaves one folded to make a 4 pp. bifolum paper printed in black. One is white on is a light tan. Overall a VG copy. Some rubbing to the edges corners lightly bumped. The cord tie is a bit frayed. Some foxing to head and tail of the menu small inscription to head of the first page of the menu otherwise bright and clean. Wine list with faint soiling and age toning. Ephemera items with some age toning more so to the tan sheet. Nonetheless a nice copy of this little menu collection. Bifolium housed in larger wrappers. Small bifolium inside wine list and two other pieces of ephemera related to the novel "The Maltese Falcon". Menu wrappers with full page/full color illustration by San Francisco artist Dennis Ziemienski. Some smaller illustrations throughout. Menu: 16" x 9" <br/><br/>This menu is inscribed by Elisha Cook Jr. 1903 - 1995 who played Wilmer in the 1941 version of The Maltese Falcon. The inscription reads "Sally & Joe - Best - Elisha Cook". "John's Grill is a historic restaurant in San Francisco California at 63 Ellis Street. The restaurant is famous in part thanks to the novel The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Overall a bright legible VG copy of this extensive wine list. 24 pp unnumbered. Approx. 9-1/2 x 6-1/4" <br/><br/>About 500 wines are listed throughout this little booklet. Categorized with 10 pages of "Vins Rouges" 2 pages of "Vins Rouges Demi-Bouteilles 2 pages of "Vins Rouges Magnums 3 pages of "Vins Blancs" 2 pages of "Bourgognes" 1 page "Champagnes" 1 page "Champagnes Demi-bouteilles and ending with 2 pages of "Liqueurs". Le Chapon Fin still exists today as does the incredible wine cellar which they do tours of! We found a little blurb about the restaurants history on the website: "Immediately after the French Revolution part of the central area of Bordeaux was rebuilt. New streets radiated out from a market square. In 1825 Messrs Chantal and Despirou opened a restaurant and wine merchant's shop at 7 Rue Montesquieu next to the Théâtre Français. "Le Chapon Fin" quickly became a popular address. . Chapon Fin was frequented by a succession of kings: Alfonso XIII of Spain one of the restaurant's most faithful customers who had his own wine cellar Manuel II of Portugal the Sultan of Morocco Queen Ranavalona of Madagascar and the Prince of Wales later Edward VII. The Chapon Fin was also a favorite with artists such as Sarah Bernhardt Yvette Guilbert and Toulouse Lautrec and politicians such as Aristide Briand who adored the lamprey in red wine and George Clemenceau." Photograph: 6-5/8" x 8-5/8". Mount: 9" x 10-7/8" <br/><br/>A rare item of San Francisco local history this photograph documents a short-lived restaurant operated by Joseph S. Lincecum located at 694 McAllister Street. Mount verso with prior owner pencil annotations naming the 5 individuals behind the counter including Lincecum's wife Adell as well as dating the image Jan 5 - 12. An examination of period San Francisco business directories shows Lincecum's restaurant first appearing in 1910 albeit at another location 459 Franklin no entry in 1911 at this location in 1912 and absent once again from the 1914 as well as 1916 editions. A search of Ancestry shows a Joseph S. Lincecum born in New Brownsville TX in 1866 dying in Deming NM in 1919 who we believe may be this individual though we are unable to independently confirm that supposition. unknown books

Printed bifolium black lettering two slips with purple ink typed on light yellow paper. Spray painted upper wrapper in red green orange and black paint small newspaper clipping advertising Milligan's is glued to the tail of the upper wrapper. Folio 13-3/4" x 9-1/2" <br/><br/>According to San Francisco City Directories Milligan's operated at two locations from 1922 - 1939. From 1922 - 1930 it was located at 395 Geary Blvd. Geary and 4th Ave. There is no listing in the City Directory for the year 1931 as they changed locations. In 1932 they reopened at 3701 Geary Blvd. Geary and Arguello and they closed their doors in 1939. This menu is from the second location at Geary and Arguello a.k.a. First Ave. The top of the menu reads: "In the preparation of these Mexican and Spanish Dishes mild sweet pepper flavors are carefully blended with the several pugent spices commonly used in Mexico. These dishes are not hot with peppers and to please those who desire strong pepper flavors we have prepared our 'Old Mexico pepper Sauce' which will be served with your order. Being proud of San Francisco and its history we pay homage to the romance of its early days by selecting only the finest recipes from Mexico's most famous haciendas. Four signatures from people in government who attended the event. 4 pp. unnumbered housed in larger wrappers. Two full page illustrations on upper and lower wrappers 8 smaller vignette illustrations throughout. 9" x 6-3/4" <br/><br/>Duke Ormsby worked for the San Francisco Municipal Railway from 1914 - 1951. Signatures are on the first page. Four signatures from Elmer E. Robinson 1894 - 1982 - 33rd Mayor of San Francisco Duke C. Ormsby - General Superintendent of Transportation who is being honored Chas. D. Miller - Operating Manager Municipal Railway and George W. Evington - Committee. The illustrations on the wrappers depict assumed to be Duke C. Ormsby working and dreaming of fishing by a creek on the upper wrapper and fishing and thinking about work on the lower wrapper. These were done by another member of the committee Chas. L. Reed. One could also say he did the smaller illustrations as well base of style similarities. Dishes served at the event had silly names realting to transportation such as "Crab Salad a la Muni Railway" "Cable Car Poullet" and to drink "High Octane Wine"! Progam started with an introduction from Donald Mazzoni the Master of Ceremonies from Wm. H. Scott a presentation from J. H. Turner Manager of Utilities and ending with a response from D. C. A VG/VG copy menu has some age toning and soiling edges rubbed wrapper is torn at the spine from tail to first hole punch internally clean and bright. Slips are in NF condition. Bifolium housed in larger card stock wrappers wine list - 4 pp. unnnumbered plus eight slips. Illustrated throughout. Folio 16" x 9" <br/><br/>The first page of the menu has a piece titled "Stalking Sam Spade" by Fritz Leiber 1910 - 1992. Originally published in "California Living The San Francisco Examiner and Chronicle - January 13 1974". The brief description that introduces this Lieber article is by Herb Caen 1916 - 1997 a beloved journalist of the San Franciscco Chronicle. The menu is signed by three people William Nolan author "Dashiell Hammett A Casebook" and Jack Kaplan Pinkerton's Inc. - both spoke at the beginning of the event. The third signature is by Edward Shea who was listed no where on the program. On the lower wrapper of the wine list has a brief history of Dashiell Hammett mentioning his service in WWI and WWII as well as his writing. There two copies of a slip titled "Pinkerton's Inc". This describes the founding and early history of Pinkerton's a detective agency that Mr. Hammett worked for in the 1920s. As noted in the history Pinkerton's hired the first female detective in the nation - Mrs. Kate Warne. A hand typed letter from Eugene F. Palmer Asst. Vice President Regional Manager and a copy of a newspaper article titled "The Eye: Hammett Room Now Has Falcon" are stapled together. The letter welcomes the Mystery Writers of America and the California Historical Society to a "nostalgic journey to the DASHIELL HAMMETT haunts". The article attached is from the Pinkerton "national company newspaper" that concerns former Detective Hammett. A three page stapled document titled "Excerps from the Introduction by Lillian Hellman 1905 - 1984 to "The Big Knockover" by Dashiell Hammett". Lillian Hellman edited a collection of short stories by Hammett titled "The Big Knockover" published by Random House in 1966. According to Wikipedia: "Her introductory profile of Hammett was her first exercise in memoir writing." This excerpt is both funny sad and tragic. Also included with this menu are two copies of the schedule of events. Sights visitied include but not limited too St. Francis Hotel 20 Monroe Place - Hammett's residence in 1924 Geary Theater Samuels Jewelers Flood Building - 870 Market former Pinkerton's office was in room 414 120 Ellis Hammett's residence in 1921 after his marriage and the famous John's Grill. And finally two small business card size slips. One printed on green paper that statees where to meet and how much tickets are. The other is card stock folded advertising John's Grill and The Maltese Falcon banquet room on the upper and lower wrappers inside is a small map of the area surrounding John's Grill. unknown books

A promotional cocktail book with recipes as well from the oldest restaurant in Florida and one of the oldest and largest Spanish/Cuban restaurants in America. A tip of the hat is given to the bartender "Genial" Tony who is indicated as the compiler. A single illustration of a woman raising a glass is signed by the illustrator in the print "Com Cut". The cocktail recipes include a Napoleon "Columbia" Jack Rose Caribe Orange Blossom Conchita "Columbia" Abbey Cocktail Gin Ricky Absinthe Frappe Bull-Dog Daiquiri Cocktail Real Presidente Cocktail Dry Martine Cocktail Oriente Seventh Heaven and others. Culinary recipes include Black Beans Yellow Rice and Chicken and Spanish Bean Soup. Opened in 1903 and owned by the same family since 1905 the Columbia Restaurant is the oldest restaurant in Florida. The original name "Columbia Saloon" was dropped with the onset of Prohibition in favor of the more neutral Columbia Restaurant. After Repeal the Columbia reinvigorated its bar business and added entertainment becoming a regular stop for Latin American entertainers and touring musicians. The archives of the restaurant and of its owners the Gonzmart family are held at Florida State University. The interior and back panels of the wrappers include advertisements for Mr. Old Boston Fine Liquors Tropical Ice Cream and Sherbert Company of Tampa and wines from Spain's Castel del Remey. The front wrapper panel printed in black and blue features a Spanish galleon. Stapled in wrappers with a small smudge to rear panel otherwise near fine. Unrecorded. 19206230Bruxelles 1920. Pair of bi-fold menus each 13.5 x 12 cm. Illustrations in color via pochoir. Two menus foran Italian restaurant in Brussels. The dishes on offer are identical on each menu but each of the fine Art Deco illustrations signed in the print "Lyett" features a glamorously dressed woman in repose on a dish one a sleepy langoustine and the other adding champagne to a punch. Wooden guest book in the shape of a door wooden metal hinges 50 leaves sewn with pink cord with seventy-five holograph signatures nearly forty of which we have been able to identify. The Old Denmark was a casual restaurant at 135 East 57th Street and later 113 East 65th Street on New York's Upper East Side. A 1964 review gave the restaurant one star and described it as "first and foremost a purveyor of Scandinavian delicacies for the retail trade but it also boasts one table where customers may dine on Danish salads. There is a seating capacity for eight guests at a time and the table is shared by other customers. The food served consists primarily of salads such as cucumber mushroom crab beet and herring but there is also liver paté and smoked salmon."
