Text with some light foxing around the edges small nick to tail of backstrip clean and unmarked otherwise with solid binding; DJ edgeworn and chipped at tail spine faded dampstain to spine interior now wrapped in mylar. 'The New Testament Octapla presents-for the first time-the full text of eight English translations of the New Testament from Tyndale to the Revised Standard Version arranged on facing pages. It shows the development of the Tyndale-King James tradi-tion in the succession of translations from 1525 to 1611 and in the revisions from 1870 to 1960. Versions included here with dates in parentheses indicating years of original publication are: Tyndale 1525 1535 Rheims 1582 Great Bible 1539 1540 King James 1611 1873 Geneva Bible 1560 1562 RV 1881 ASV 1901 Bishops Bible 1568 1602 RSV 1946 1960 TYNDALE is represented by his final revision the GH edition published in 1535 which is reprinted here for the first time in book form. Miles Coverdale's translation known as the GREAT BIBLE was commissioned by Sir Thomas Cromwell Secretary to King Henry VIII and Vicar General. The first edition published at London in 1539 was the first 'authorized' edition. The second edition used here was published in 1540. The GENEVA BIBLE was published by English Protestants who had fled to Geneva from the persecutions under Queen Mary. Although never 'authorized' it became the household Bible of the English-speaking peoples. The second edition 1562 is used The text of the BISHOPS' BIBLE is that of the revision of 1572 as printed in the edition of 1602. This Bible was authorized by Convocation and its possession enjoined upon the churches. This became the basis of the revision under King James. The RHEIMS translation is copied from the first edition 1582. It was made from the Latin Vulgate by Roman Catholic scholars the larger part of the work being done by Gregory Martin. King James I ordained in 1604 that a translation of the whole Bible be made; in 1611 this version of the Bible was published with a dedication to him. The text of the KING JAMES VERSION here used is taken from the critical edition which was published as The Cambridge Paragraph Bible of the Authorized English Version in 1873. The revision of the 1870's is represented by the AMERICAN STANDARD VERSION 1901 rather than the Revised Version published in England in 1881 for its use led directly to the next major revision the REVISED STANDARD VERSION which appears here as published in 1960. Each of the versions is reproduced in The New Testament Octapla in the edition on which succeeding scholars have based their work. The copy of Tyndale's GH edition in the New York Public Library supplemented by photostats from the Bod-leian Library of Oxford University and photostats of the other sixteenth-century editions were used to ensure accuracy. The spelling punctuation and paragraphing of the selected edition of each version have been retained. Verse numbers have been added to Tyndale and the Great Bible to make for easier comparison.' Twenty-fourmo size 28 pp. The Saint Dominic's Press founded by Harry Hilary Douglas Clarke Pepler flourished at Ditchling Sussex from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable" with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'.product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine handmade to machine-made paper and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines." N.b. quotes and information from "Three Private Presses" by Brocard Sewell. Per Taylor and Sewell "The Welfare Handbooks were a series of pamplets mainly concerned with social questions written from a Distributist and Roman Catholic standpoint." This volume contains scriptural passages pertaining to the age-old question of the relative merits of wealth vs. poverty vis-a-vis one's relationship with God. Per the title page "Being extracts from The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ as translated from the Latin Vulgate by the English College at Rheims A.D. 1582." ___DESCRIPTION: Brown wrappers printed in black string-bound with one engraving Gill's "Christ and the Money-Changers" P 152; Caslon O.F. type on Batachelor hand-made paper twenty-fourmo size 5 3/8" by 4 1/4" pagination: i-iv 1 2-24. ___CONDITION: Fine overall the wraps clean except for one small spot on the front wrap and without wear or sunning the string binding strong the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; perhaps a touch of sunning around the spine and the aforementioned small spot else fine. ___CITATION: Taylor and Sewell no. Illustrated with eleven original etchings by Cecile Reims: ten full-page etchings and with a smaller etching on the title page. The text is in French and Hebrew. The etchings and binding are fine very fresh and bright in the publisher's unprinted glassine and in publisher's tan paper-covered chemise and publisher's slipcase box. Spine of chemise has light wear on spine with small light brown stain on lower spine else very good slipcase is rubbed at extremities and is else very good. Limited to 400 numbered copies sur velin de rives paper of the artist's first book. Cecile Reims a French-Jewish artist was born in Paris in 1927. Following the occupation of France she joined the Jewish combat organization in 1943 and at the conclusion of the war in 1945 she discovered that her entire family had been massacred. Jean-Noel Jeannerey President of the French National LIbrary stated the following at the opening of the French National Library exhibit "Cecile Reims Engraver" at the Louvre in 2004: "When she was very young her energy was forged in France in the Resistance movement then in Palestine- but shortly thereafter health deficiencies forced her to take up less. intense strenuous combats in the field of art. Initiated in burin engraving in Paris by Joseph Hecht a rigorous master she produced over 60 original works between 1950 and 1960 which attracted much attention. Her encounter with Hans Bellmer afterwards was decisive. No one can deny that her work contributed greatly to extending the universal success of Bellmer. In the same way after 1971 she worked with many drawings by her husband Fred Deus and by Leonor Fini. For the past few years she is once again doing engravings based on her own compositions. Her talent as an interpreter first secretly then revealed ties her to a splendid tradition. Her own talent as an inventor showing both virtuosity and elegance deserves being acknowledged." Psaumes 1951 is her first published work following her first exhibition at the Le Fanal Gallery. Later in the same year the Bezalel Museum in Jerusalem presented her first exhibit of engravings.
