Tear along middle of image which has been expertly repaired. Some creases in image. A rare working proof by John Browne the celebrated English landscape engraver.<br/> <br/>One of the most esteemed English landscape engravers John Browne was born in Finchfield Essex in 1741. In 1756 he was apprenticed to the engraver John Tinney but then went to work for the influential landscape engraver William Woollett. It is believed that many of Woollett's most admired plates were in fact engraved by Browne. He devoted himself entirely to engraving landscape and genre scenes in particular after works by the French and Dutch masters. In 1770 he was elected an associate engraver of the Royal Academy exhibiting thirteen plates between 1767 and 1801. This stunning genre scene is a wonderful example of his skilled hand and a rare working proof. This intriguing print shows a unique step in the printmaking process before an image is ready for publication. Before the image is completed the engraver has printed a trial impression to view this stage of the engraved plate. It is incredibly rare to find prints in this unfinished experimental stage; impressions which were pulled as working proofs are unique and were almost never duplicated.<br/> <br/>Dictionary of National Biography. unknown books

Gilpin published a series of these illustrated picturesque volumes basically as guide books for the traveller with marvelous tinted illustrations of those areas and he described all the "must see" items such as buildings statues lakes castles etc. lacking a half-title 18 full page tinted plates handsomely bound in full red straight grained morocco boards decoratively ruled in gilt and blind flat spine lettered and ruled in gilt inner gilt turn-ins marbled endpapers all edges gilt protecting the fore-edge painting underneath. Some light scattered foxing small corner tear to page 39 marginal only A very nice copy from the library of Lt. Col. Former ownership name removed from title. Very good. This volume has a DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING by the American Doubler painter with scenes of New York and Philadelphia painted sometime after WWII and before November 1965 a date in the back of the book shows that time presumed to be a bookseller's mark. The TWO FORE-EDGE PAINTINGS by CLARE BOOKSBANK signed. The scene on volume I is possibly a view of King George III and the House of Parliament; on volume II Westminster from the Thames River. The identity of Junius is open to question and debate and may never be finally resolved unless documents are found which establish his identity. On the other hand scholars now generally support the identification with Sir Philip Francis. "The case for Philip Francis first proposed by John Taylor in 1816 has established itself as by far the most probable though categorical proof is still not forthcoming" DNB. The Letters of Junius were the official letters that Junius collected refined and published in 1772.
