1885143011885. Iran Art Qajar School Lovers in Embrace gouache painting on paper nineteenth century represents the courtly aesthetic erotic refinement and dynastic visual language that defined Persian painting under Qajar rule. The composition situates a princely male figure and his adorned companion in intimate embrace reinforcing themes of aristocratic leisure romanticized sovereignty and elite identity in Qajar Iran. The work supports research in Persian court painting gender representation in Islamic art Qajar costume and regalia and nineteenth century Iranian material culture.

Persian Qajar gouache on paper with gold illuminated border. Depicts a young prince wearing blue and gold coat and karakul headgear embracing female companion adorned with tiara and pearls. Floral and animal illuminated margins including deer and monkeys. Image size 18.5 x 11 inches.

The prince's distinctive headgear confirms Qajar rather than Zand period attribution aligning the work with the heightened stylization and opulent textile rendering characteristic of nineteenth century Tehran ateliers. Comparable compositions appear in Qajar painting traditions associated with artists such as Mohammad Sadiq whose courtly embrace scenes similarly emphasize costume detail glassware and staged intimacy as markers of refinement. The illuminated border populated by floral and animal motifs situates the lovers within a cosmological and decorative framework typical of Qajar manuscript aesthetics adapted to single-sheet painting. Minor browning to margins and discreet restoration to verso margins not affecting image. Very good. A refined example of Qajar visual culture centered on dynastic elegance and performative intimacy. unknown

190022170China: n.p. 1900. Hardcover. Near fine. 8vo. 22 unnumbered pages using verso only. Accordion book bound in Asian style. Wooden boards the upper board carved with the character for Good Luck. Top and bottom edges gilt.

This is followed by 11 sets of two pages the right hand page with the story of a particular lady in Chinese and English and the left hand with a painting on silk illustrating the story and bordered in brocade. The silk paintings are bright and unfaded showing vibrant pigmentation and artistically executed with lovely shading effect Includes the story of Mu Lan basis for the Disney film.

The typesetting and spelling of the English translation are poorly accomplished the word 'Cbinese' in the title being perhaps the most glaring example. Misspellings misuses of quotation marks and unusual word separations lead us to believe this is the first issue of a title preprinted into the 1930's.

A fine example.

Scarce. n.p. hardcover

Frost's signed book label mounted as a bookplate in front dated 2007. The artist is playing with us by making the trees into the shape of a phallus all of them!. Painting also signed "MF". Frost himself describes this as "A Rowlandesque road scene of travelers 'whipping up' themselves as well as their mounts!" / This is one of the early efforts of MF to bind and paint the book himself. 1801FF2530London:: Printed for T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies by G.R. Clarke 1801. 1801. Small 8vo. xx ii 232 pp. Original full dark navy blue straight-grained morocco gilt Greek-key tooling surround five raised bands elaborate gilt compartments all edges gilt. Very good . With a fine fore-edge painting under the gilt showing "Christchurch in Hampshire here James Fordyce lived" inscribed in the artist's hand note somewhat unusual handwriting style and the use of parenthesis. With an early typed note in ALL CAPS relating to the painting take note of the sheet being hand-outlined in red. The artist possibly copied the engraving "Christchurch Hampshire" from the print by E. Finden after a picture by W. Westall published in Great Britain Illustrated 1830. This view shows the single rowboat in the foreground similar to the image with this fore-edge painting. Artist unknown; painted ca. 1900-1955. This scene is delicately and skillfully painted. The painting suggests early 20th century work though it is not signed and there are not yet any recognizable characteristics yet to suggest the artist's identity. Very finely painted view. / "Fordyce's delivery and gestures were studied and he drew crowds to Monkwell Street. His topics were didactic but he also satisfied cultured tastes and dealt with the ethics of actual life. David Garrick was impressed; Fordyce associated with Samuel Johnson and introduced him to Blair. He gave sympathetic account in Addresses to the Deity 1785 of Johnson's religious character speaking as an evangelical moderate." DNB. Printed for T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, by G.R. Clarke, 1801. hardcover
