One of Holme's four classic Studio Publications on Japanese print culture presenting a finely curated suite of kacho-ga plates that helped shape early Western appreciation of ukiyo-e. A handsome volume and still one of the most approachable gateways into the field with a graceful selection of ukiyo-e images centred on the world of the geisha; musicians dancers and performers captured in moments of poise ritual and quiet artistry. Holme's curation highlights the refinement of gesture costume and setting offering Western readers an early respectful window onto the professional culture of women trained in music dance and social accomplishment. It's the most atmospheric of the four volumes rich in mood and stage-like elegance. 8 large colour plates images measuring 15 x 22 cms approx each with tissue guards and 6 pages of explanatory text. Some foxing to the paper throughout but not to the printed images though their surrounds are foxed. Printed boards covered in Japanese style paper. The spine is absent though the binding is still firm. Printed paper label to front board as issued. Size: 25 x 31.5 cms. 1917179171917. Albumen portraits of young congregates at Lutheran church in Jamestown New York. 1917. Measures 20" x 16" inches. Large attractive compilation of individual portraits set in oval cut-outs surrounding photo of the Lutheran church the subjects attended marked "Class 1917". On photographer's board. Blank verso. Individual portraits measure 2" x 1.5" inches. Student portraits show subjects dressed in formal attire girls in white blouses with large bows in their hair and boys in suits with white ties. Subjects appear to be in very early adolescence. 26 students are female 21 male and the teacher pictured just above the church is male. An unusually large portrait compilation from the time. Mat has 2 inch pieces torn on corners and one side does not affect image. Overall good condition. unknown

The photograph is stamped "Pirie MacDonald Photographer-of-Men New York." The image measures approximately 6" x 9" and is affixed to MacDonald's original mounting board which measures 11" x 14". On the back of the board is imprinted an array of information of MacDonald's awards and accomplishments and address. A further affixed label indicates this photograph of Maugham was taken in 1935 and signed by him in 1947. An excellent and rare "soft focus" image. Very good.</p> unknown
