A Fine Album of Studio Portraits Including One by Louise Fleckenstein Assembled by California Artist Hattie Goldnamer.

189076014V.p.: V.p. 1890-1920. The soft leather-covered album measures 15.5 x 11.5 inches and contains fifty extant pages containing a total of 164 original photographs of varying sizes. The album has had some of its pages removed and there are missing photos from extant pages. There are an additional 23 fine photos either unmounted or on partial pages that have been removed from the album but are present in this offering. Altogether there are 187 photographs in this grouping. Several of the photos are over 9 x 13 inches in size. The photographs whether still in the album or separated from it are in Fine condition. Harriette Hattie Elizabeth Hill Foster Goldnamer 1868-1940 assembled the album and wrote the white ink photo descriptions in a wonderful cursive hand. According to Hughesâ€™ Artists in California Hattie married â€œâ€¦ Daniel Foster and moved to Fresno CA in 1886. In 1904 she moved to San Francisco where she studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute and privately with Frederick Bauer. A widow by 1910 she had married Wm. Goldnamer. She then settled in Oakland where she remained until her demise on May 2 1940.â€ As an artist Hattie worked in charcoal and oil and specialized in still life and figure studies. This album is one of three family photographs she put together that we acquired together. Although the family names are the same in all three each stands alone and we are offering them individually. All but nine of the 164 photographs in the album are fine portraits of her family and friends and several of herself. Surnames identified in the album include Hill Foster McNeil Gardner Potter Bryer Gould Pierce Page Oust Le Blanc Ryan McKenzie Holden Oberwetter Russell Hutchens Eldred Dunbar King Brown Scholler Holaday Radley Hutchens and many others. From the identification inscriptions beneath the photos along with photographersâ€™ imprints many of Hattieâ€™s family and friends were from the Illinois-Nebraska area and California. There are a number of oval portraits of identified individuals both male and female dated 1900. The other nine images in the album are large photos of the Hill Dunbar and Oberwetter ranches in Nebraska and Wyoming circa 1895-1900.The photo with the â€œLouis Fleckenstein / Los Angelesâ€ blind stamp is of Loraine Stebinger who signed the photoâ€™s mount â€œMost sincerely Loraine Stebinger Dec. 25 1918.â€ Removed from the album the photograph of the musician shows her playing the piano and measures 7 x 10 inches on a 10 x 13.5 inch cream colored mount. Fleckenstein 1866-1943 was an internationally known pictorialist photographer before moving to Los Angeles in 1907 to open up a portrait studio. He and a colleague had already organized the Salon Club of America to give support to regional camera clubs interested in pictorial photography where the emphasis was on photography as an art form rather than a documentary tool â€“ aesthetics over reality! In 1914 along with Edward Weston and others Fleckenstein helped found the Camera Pictorialists of Los Angeles. In 1924 he relocated to Long Beach where he continued his work in photography. His photos are now in most major museum collections of photography.Another unattributed photo of Stebinger has an ink presentation â€œTo my dearly beloved Friend Harriet Goldnamer from Lorraine Stebingerâ€. That presentation photo was key to identifying Hattie Goldnamer as the compiler of all three albums acquired at the same time of which this is one. Of interest is the penciled note on the back that attributes it along with several other shots of Stebinger in the same dress to Fleckenstein. However that has not been verified. V.p. hardcover

In a maroon fleece-lined slipcase. With five engraved plates reproducing portraits of Shakespeare. Jaggard pp. 586-87. Slight wear to silk endleaves at front hinge isolated small printing smudges or other trivial defects final leaf ads with short closed tear at head otherwise A VERY FINE COPY the text with no signs of use and the splendid binding in perfect condition. This analysis of portraits purporting to depict Shakespeare is the perfect vehicle for a Cosway binding used here to present the leading contenders on the front cover these likenesses also appear on engraved plates in the book. The portrait at the center of our cover is considered the most authoritative being that done by Martin Droeshout for the First Folio of 1623. The other portraits shown in the plates and in the miniatures are the Chandos Head the Stratford Bust the engraving by W. Marshall from the 1640 edition of the poems and the Jansen portrait of 1610. A Shakespeare scholar who raised the alarm about forgeries of Shakespeare manuscripts in the 1790s Boaden 1762-1839 sets forth here as indicated in the preface "a careful examination of the evidence" by which "the pretended portraits have been rejected and the genuine confirmed and established." The so-called "Cosway" binding with painted miniatures inlaid in handsome morocco--either inside or as here on the outside of the front cover--apparently originated with the London bookselling firm of Henry Sotheran about 1909. In that year G. C. Williamson's 1905 book entitled "Richard Cosway" which celebrated the career of this leading Georgian and Regency miniature painter was remaindered by Sotheran and presumably given this special decorative treatment in order to boost sales. The name "Cosway" then was used to describe any book so treated whatever its subject. The finest miniatures on Cosway bindings were executed by Caroline Billin Currie 1849-1940 who is known to have created such paintings for Sotheran's from 1910 until her death usually from designs by J. H. Stonehouse and typically for bindings executed as here by Riviere. Not present in this volume is an inserted leaf acknowledging Currie's work--something normally seen with Cosway bindings featuring her miniatures; but she has a distinctive deftness to her brush strokes and a recognizably refined execution that are clearly present here. The precision and detail of these portraits and the wonderfully expressive eyes are hallmarks of her work. Robert Triphook unknown
