1948SDAL003New York: Doubleday & Company 1948 Translated by John Addington Symonds. Illustrated by Salvador Dalí with full-page color plates and black-and-white drawings. First trade edition. Signed by Dalí with an original drawing of a horse on verso of half-title page. Publisher's red cloth with horse illustration in gilt to front board and black label lettered in gilt to spine. Very good with some fading to spine some rubbing to spine label and dimming to spine gilt front board gilt bright and a hint of offsetting to endpapers. Overall an attractive copy scarce signed. The Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini was written by the Italian sculptor and draftsman in the sixteenth century although it was not published until 1728. This work detailing the personal life of a well-known artist has become perhaps the most important autobiography of the Italian Renaissance giving readers a glimpse into the lives of historical figures like Michelangelo and the Medici family. In his writing Cellini is unconcerned with maintaining a proper image of himself and uses humor and exaggerations to embellish his story even describing violent attacks he supposedly committed and otherworldly experiences he endured. This trade edition was preceded by a 1946 limited edition of 1000 numbered copies signed by Dalí. Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. New York: Doubleday & Company hardcover
193322613New York: Julien Levy Gallery 1933. Single sheet. Very Good. A wonderful piece of Surrealist ephemera and one of the great early Julien Levy catalogues. The scarce historic November-December 1933 catalogue/announcement of Salvador Dali's first solo exhibition in America. 26 listed paintings followed by a Dali essay and 2 Dali illustrations. All on a single purple sheet folded into thirds. Light creasing at all 3 panels renders this copy a VG to VG rather than a Near Fine but happily the fragile catalogue remains bright and very presentable. This copy also boasts superb provenance having come directly from the family of artist --and Julien Levy patron-- Joseph Cornell and before that from his house itself famously on Utopia Parkway in Flushing Queens New York. 1963150996Paris: Jean-Jacques Pauvert 1963. Inscribed by Dali First edition inscribed by the artist across the title page "Pour Christine Vaclasmy Dali 1963" with a loose sketch of a figure possibly a girl skipping a common motif in Dalí's work. The Angelus by Jean-Francois Millet is an oil painting completed between 1857 and 1859. It depicts two figures in a field heads bowed over a basket of potatoes in their recitation of the Catholic devotional prayer. It had a significant impact on Dali who saw a print of the painting early in life and insisted that it did not depict a prayer but a funeral scene. The Louvre at his request had the painting examined by x-ray and showed that there was originally a small coffin-shaped object painted in place of the basket. This discovery is included in the prologue and much of the text depends upon Dalí's interpretation of The Angelus as a tragic image of American folklore. Dalí created several paintings inspired by the titular work: The Architectural Angelus of Millet and Gala 1933 and Gala and the Angelus of Millet Preceding the Imminent Arrival of the Conical Anamorphoses 1933. These were followed two years later by a similar pair of paintings which included a partial reproduction of Millet's Angelus called The Angelus of Gala and Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet's Angelus. Quarto. Illustrated throughout by Salvador Dali 33 plates tipped in. Original beige cloth with woven strap and buckle titles to front cover on octagonal plate in red and black black and white illustration of The Angelus to front cover on rectangular plate. Housed in a custom box illustrated with photographs of this copy. Lightly foxed with a few marks and one small scratch to covers a little shelfwear a few slight bumps to head of front board a touch of foxing to end matter and occasionally toned box a little rubbed and tips lightly bumped else bright and clean. A very good copy indeed square and firm. hardcover
