Illustrated with a frontispiece drawing by Salvador Dalí. Precious signed autograph presentation from Paul Eluard to René Char : « Exemplaire de mon ami René Char. Captivated the young twenty-two-year-old poet from L'Isle decided to send him a copy of his collection Arsenal inscribing it with the following dedication: « à Paul éluard enfin. L'Isle 17 septembre 1929. » His elder responded kindly a few weeks later: « Cher Monsieur n'est-il pas possible que nous nous connaissions mieux Ne pensez-vous pas venir à Paris Je serais heureux de vous dire combien j'aime vos poèmes tout ce si beau livre. » The young Char elated set off for the first time to meet his « substitute brother » Laurent Greilsamer René Char Perrin 2012 and soon decided to move to Paris to join his new companions Aragon Breton and Eluard placing himself under the Surrealist banner. Eluard abandoned by Gala who left him for Dalí offered Char to live in his apartment on rue Becquerel. The two bachelors soon engaged Odette a young maid who was more than agreeable: « Char enjoyed this refined service but was nevertheless surprised by the marked kindness of this pretty brunette. One day he took her in his arms. The young beauty smiled yielded and proved herself expert. That evening René recounted his adventure to Eluard who the next morning had his breakfast served in bed and invited Odette to join him. A temporary trio was thus formed. » op. cit. Char and Eluard now inseparable shared a taste for revelry and frenetic seduction roaming the Parisian boulevards in search of adventure. Thus on the evening of 21 May 1930 they met a destitute actress and trapeze artist: Nusch. « Eluard decided to take her back like a precious parcel to rue Becquerel. But it would take all the friendship of Char and his powers of persuasion to convince the young woman to stay giving Eluard the timeall the timeto fall in love. » op. cit. Char thus played the role of mediator enabling Eluard to win the great love of his life who died prematurely in 1946 of a cerebral haemorrhage. Despite several passing quarrelsnever over women but always over ideasthe two poets maintained a strong bond of friendship and intellect until the end of Eluard's life. « Je suis vieux René par instants à force de ne plus aimer la vie. Je vis par devoir. Mais je t'aime profondément comme je t'ai toujours aimé : ne te choque de rien ; venant de moi tout est pour moi affection et admiration. . Quelle preuve de plus peux-tu en avoir que je te dise que tu es le seul homme à qui je pourrais avouer ce grand vide que je porte en moi et devant qui je pourrais pleurer autant que j'en ai toujours envie. » GLM hardcover

196839447Paris: Draeger 1968. Salvador Dalí. First edition. A PRESENTATION COPY FOR DR. ROUCAUTE Dalí's personal physician with a SIGNED AND DEDICATED INDIA INK DRAWING BY DALI ON A PRELIMINARY BLANK. Most of Dalí's presentation drawings were done on the spur of the moment in ballpoint or felt-tip pen and are rather simple compositions. This one however is in India ink with Dalí's characteristic carefully-planned spatter: it was obviously prepared ahead of time for presentation to a close friend the doctor. The drawing measures 27.5 x 30 cm and features several typical elements of Dalí's iconography: a knight on horseback an angel a dedicatory phrase a signature with a crown and a date. They are arranged in an absolutely wonderful apparent chaos--making it impossible to know what to look at first or what to focus on--and yet there is perfect harmony. Large 4to. Publisher's cloth with dustjacket. An excellent copy of the book WITH THE INDIA INK DRAWING IN PERFECT CONDITION.

Draeger hardcover
1969190911New York: Maecenas Press Random House 1969. Wonderland Surrealized First Dalí edition number 608 of 2500 copies signed by Dalí on the title page recasting Carroll's children's classic into adult surrealist vision. "The artist Salvador Dalí famous for his surreal images of melting clocks and barren landscapes at first glance might not seem to have much in common with a retiring Victorian English don who wrote children's books. But actually Dalí and Carroll had much in common: both men were ardent explorers of dreams and the imagination attempting in their art to show the fertile pathways to the unconscious. This artistic temperament might explain why in his sixties Dalí created twelve surreal illustrations - one for each chapter - for Alice in Wonderland. Because he required a rich lush palette for his painted drawings Dalí turned to the oldest process for reproducing photographic images for printing: heliogravure. Similar to engraving the method is time consuming and costly. Each heliogravure is printed by hand and considered an original" Nichols p. 28. A further 200 copies were issued signed and with extra plates. This copy has a duplicate limitation leaf numbered 608 inserted; presumably a collation error by the publisher; the book is otherwise complete. Folio. With 12 colour heliogravures and a four-colour etched frontispiece on Rives paper. Publisher's fall-down-back box of brown straight-grain quarter morocco cloth sides portfolio of letterpress and illustrations loose in the brown cloth chemise as issued. Illustrated with 15 original photographic prints of the mannequins photographed by Man Ray at the 1938 International Exhibition of Surrealism. The mannequins had been transformed by Man Ray himself Salvador Dalí Oscar Dominguez Marcel Duchamp Max Ernst Espinoza Maurice Henry Marcel Jean Léo Malet André Masson Sonia Mossé Joan Miró Wolfgang Paalen Kurt Seligmann and Yves Tanguy. They were presented within a Surrealist staging by Marcel Duchamp and lighting designed by Man Ray himself. During the 1930s the European Surrealists had a fetishistic interest in simulated woman-female mannequins that they transformed into playful sculptural works of art. In 1938 Man Ray photographed a series of their work at the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme presented in the unsettling half-light of the Galerie des Beaux-Arts on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Visitors walking down a corridor on the Rue Surréaliste saw a series of dressmakers mannequins inhabitants of a dreamlike Paris scantily clad or adorned with a jumble of incongruous objects and flanked by street signs bearing highly symbolic names: some real such as the Rue des Vieilles Lanternes where Gérard de Nerval took his own life or the Rue Vivienne where Lautréamont once lived alongside invented ones such as the Rue aux Lèvres the Rue de Tous-les-Diables and the Rue de la Transfusion-de-Sang. The installations of this first international Parisian Surrealist exhibition organised by André Breton and Éluard marked a decisive moment in the history of the movement. For the first time the event dispensed with a straightforward retrospective of individual artists in favour of a series of phantasmagorical stagings live performances and ephemeral artworks prefiguring the modern concepts of installation and happening. Nearly 3000 visitors are said to have thronged to this 1938 Paris exhibition by the light of electric torches: One has the feeling of leaning over certain exhumed walls and of being the first to decipher their signs. Jean Fraysse Le Figaro littéraire 29 January 1938. From Hausmanns sculpture and de Chiricos paintings to the works of Hans Bellmer the mannequin had long occupied a central place in the Dada and Surrealist artistic vocabulary and was cited in Bretons 1924 Manifeste. These woman-objects staged in the spirit of the Musée Grévin offered infinite possibilities for the transformation of the body and the exploration of the unconscious. Some have remained enduringly celebrated such as Le Bâillon vert à bouche de pensée André Massons mannequin enclosed in a birdcage or Duchamps considered the only three-dimensional version of his alter ego Rrose Sélavy taking the form of a man cross-dressed as a woman in the style of Claude Cahun. The mannequin of lesbian artist Sonia Mossé friend of Artaud and photographed by Man Ray with Nusch is her only known artwork and the sole mannequin in the installation created by a woman artist. Man Ray had incorporated Jean Petithory hardcover
