Our volume does not fall under this category: its outside is every bit as impressive as the contents. The celebrated French artist Georges Braque 1882-1963 was a painter collagist printmaker and sculptor who made important contributions to the Fauves movement in the early 20th century and to the development of Cubism in which he and Picasso were the leading lights. The illustrations here done near the end of his long career depict the five "sapates"--oil olives a jug a rough sketch of a fish a shutter--in simple black and white with more realism than his Cubist works but still in simple pared-down lines. To accompany the inscription of this volume to banker Max Pellequer d. 1974 nephew of Picasso's friend André Level Braque added a small painting of cerulean blue leaves a single note of color in the blacks whites and grays of the text and one picked up by binder François Brindeau who used that hue for the lettering on the covers. Brindeau studied at the École Estienne graduating in 1976 and then worked with Jean de Gonet. He created the present binding for bibliophile and former Olympic rowing medalist Maurice Houdayer 1931-2020 a connoisseur of contemporary bindings who had a great love of Art Deco. Houdayer served as president of the Amis de la Reliure Originale and assembled an impressive collection of illustrated books in bindings he commissioned from innovative designers. Montpellier-born poet Francis Ponge 1899-1988 was known as "the poet of things" because he wrote about simple everyday objects like the subjects of the present work. His poetry invites us to contemplate often overlooked commonplace objects and perhaps in doing so to discover something about the human psyche. Literary critic David Gascoyne noted that Ponge "addressed himself to the common reader in the hope of persuading us that poetry is not merely a preoccupation of the idle and overeducated.". Beginning with a stunning cover produced by Matisse for the first issue Verve would incorporate fresh artwork into its cover designed newly commissioned by artists such as Miro Picasso Chagall and other leading lights of the French art world. Each issue offered spectacular color lithographs printed by the Paris lithographers Mourlot. Early issues came in litho-printed card wrappers in boxes later volumes would be in paper-over board with litho covers. This choce allowed Teriade to feature the fresh lithographic artwork in the cover design but left the books themselves extremely fragile and succeptible to wear. Additionally the full-page lithographs have been continuous targets for art dealers looking to excise the plates. So condition seen here is quite rare with each volume preserved COMPLETE FINE with no signs of the wear and toning so commonly seen. 'The cover of Verve No. 1 is by Henri Matisse; it consists of three unmodulated colors--red blue and black--that the master cut directly from printers' ink specimen books. . Mattisse's cover for the first issue lithographed by Fernand Mourlot printers was an original work of art created expressly for the magazine--as would be practically all of the Verve's covers. . The painter took great pains to make sure that the cover would turn out exactly as he wished. . THe care Matisse lavished on what others might consider a minor undertaking was one of the hallmarks of Teriade's publications. Braque's celestial inferno Mourlot s. d. 1961 25.4 x 32 cm Une feuille encadrée Original lithograph printed by Mourlot on nacré Japan paper signed in pencil by Georges Braque. In 1961 Georges Braque created four lithographs to illustrate Marcel Jouhandeau's Descente aux Enfers published by the Nouveau Cercle parisien du livre in 200 copies on Rives paper. A suite on Japan paper was included with a small number of copies most of them unsigned. This lithograph is one of the rare Japan paper proofs bearing a magnificent original signature by the artist. Like Picasso after him Braque worked directly on the stone in the workshop of Fernand Mourlot the foremost address in Parisian lithography collaborating closely with the pressroom craftsmen to execute his compositions himself. The bird motif which first appeared in the artist's work in 1929 runs throughout this final period in his paintings as in his prints including this lithograph from Descente aux Enfers one of the very last illustrated books Georges Braque would produce. Rare in his uvre the remarkable lightness of colour in this work sets it apart from the other compositions in the book. Birds clouds and sky are woven together with the natural undulations of the Japan paper. Form and colour seem poised to dissolve into the sheet itself leaving for a moment the impression that the artist has signed bare space. A rare and superb lithograph on Japan paper with the artist's manuscript signature in pencil. Two small traces of adhesive on the verso. Mourlot unknown

1959184233Paris: Maeght 1959. A handsome French production First edition deluxe issue number 5 of 50 copies printed on Montval paper and signed by the artist and the poet. This is Pierre Reverdy's final poetry collection "The Freedom of the Seas" illustrated in this grand edition by his lifelong friend George Braque. Reverdy stopped writing poetry during the Second World War but had a surge of inspiration resulted in this collection and one other "Au soleil du plafond". This collection was completed in 1955 but was unpublished until Braque finished his illustrations in 1959 just before the poet's death. A further 200 signed copies on Grand Velin D'arches paper were issued simultaneously. This copy is without the additional lithographs issued with the deluxe limitation. Large folio. With 7 full-page colour plates including cover and frontispiece monochrome lithographs throughout. Original brown illustrated wrappers sheets loosely inserted as issued.
