Chardin made two trips to Persia the first in 1665 and the second in 1671 as a traveller and trader in jewels. "His account of the Persian court and of his business transactions with the shah Abbas II are of great interest." Cox The first part of the present account describes his adventures in Persia while the second is devoted to a description of the country fauna and flora manners and customs of the inhabitants manufactures trade and commerce. A Huguenot Chardin was forced to flee France in 1681 setting in London where he was knighted by Charles II appointed jeweller to the royal court and employed on a number of diplomatic missions.
