Three scarce reprints of Raphael's important ephemeris for various years across the nineneenth century. Three scarce volumes of 'Raphael's Astronomical Ephemeris' reprints of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for the years 1842 1878 and 1891.This series of ephemeris originated by Robert Cross Smith an astrology using the pseudonym 'Raphael' first published in the early nineteenth century though the name was owned by a handful of people during the decades. The 1842 'Ephemeris' was by a Mr. Medhurst whereas both 1878 and 1891 were by Robert Thomas Cross who was still 'Raphael' by the time that these reissues were published. The Raphael ephemeris present a series of tables used in astrology to determine the position of the sun moon and planets. Each of these volumes details their positions for each of the years. Thus these scientific works offer a unique insight into life during these years. The original Raphael Robert Cross Smith was significant for popularising the system of astrological house division known as the Placidean. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally generally smart a little edge worn. Wraps are age-toned with spots and handling marks. Wear to the backstrip of 1842. Internally firmly bound. Bindings shaken hinges cracked most of the backstrip of Vol. I is missing both volumes appear to have been rebacked long ago with the original spines laid down corners and edges well rubbed. The plates are toned but only in the margins. The dedication pages are dated 1847. The title pages are not dated and include the statement 'New Edition'. The imprint at the bottom of the title pages has been covered with a pastedown of the Batsford imprint which is heavily foxed. These are large and heavy; regular shipping charges will not apply.
