This is his publication while in exile in Paris of a letter of support from the clergy of Chile with his letter to them.<br>Â Â Â Â Searches of NUC WorldCat and COPAC locate four U.S. Cornell Fordham Stanford UTexas and one British BL libraries reporting ownership but we know of another U.S. library that owns a unreported copy. A touching scene after Morland: 'a master of genre and animal painting an artist worthy to be placed in the same rank as the best of those Dutch masters whom he studied as a boy' DNB<br/> <br/>This print is a wonderful example of the manner in which Morland perfectly conveys the hardships and beauties of country life his depiction of a poor country family battling the hardships of winter shows the bitter side of the pastoral life with grace and sympathy. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time creating during his industrious career some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. Morland was a prodigious painter producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. One such engraver was John Raphael Smith who throughout his career translated many of Morland's paintings to print. Smith was a highly influential figure in the late eighteenth-century British art world he quickly became an impresario of the print-publishing trade producing nearly 400 prints during his lifetime 130 of which were of his own design. This beautiful print refelects both the talents of the engraver and the genius of the artist in its sentiment and execution it demonstrates the best of English genre. Mounted on heavy card. Fair only. Archivally matted protected with mylar sheet. Later issue after the first of 1789. A striking mezzotint engraved by J.R. Smith after a 1785 painting by Joseph Wright showing an Indian woman looking out over a serene ocean while her deceased husband's tomahawk war club and quiver hang above her on a dead tree. In the background a steaming volcano and thunderclouds complete the pastoral scene. When the painting was first exhibited in 1785 this description accompanied it: <br> <br> "This picture is founded on the custom which prevails among the savage tribes of America where the widow of an eminent warrior is used to sit the whole day during the first moon after his death under a rude kind of trophy formed by a tree lopped and painted; on which the weapons and martial habiliments of the dead are suspended. She remains in this situation without shelter and perseveres in her mournful duty at the hazard of her own life from the inclemencies of the weather." <br> <br> Though Wright never travelled to America he depended heavily on James Adair's HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN INDIANS. 1775 for anthropological information for this painting. Followed by "Cartons done from the originals in His Majesty's collection" engraved title and 7 of 32 engraved plates w tissue guards without attribution of publisher or engraver. Followed by a single engraved plate by James Fittler dated 1797. Bound in full leather elaborately tooled in gilt and blind. Edges gilt. Joints and corners restored. Head and tail headbands perished.
