This copy with an applied label on the front wrap for Editions de la Galerie Simon--a famous art gallery with strength in cubist pieces--which presumably purchased a number of copies for distribution. A very good copy with some uneven offsetting and foxing to the wraps but the interior fresh bright and partly unopened. The page block is beginning to pull from the wraps with but remains attached and the interior contents are fine. This is number 13 of 100 limited copies on Arches paper SIGNED by Derain on the limitation page another four copies were on Japan paper. In a neatly folded partly clear tissue cover with some small chips which may or may not be original but is certainly contemporary. Uncommon. 191933676Paris: François Bernouard 1919. 1st Edition. 1st Edition. Rare first edition. Thin 4to. unpaginated 24 printed stiff card covers. 1 of only 104 numbered copies 4 on Japon & 100 on Arches. This copy lettered "G" and signed by Derain although no lettered copies are indicated which might account for a possible 26 additional copies printed. Designed with four full page black & white Derain illustrations. A bit of offsetting to the prelims heavy cover stock mildly aged with light soiling. Very uncommon. Vlaminck's satirical 'poeme' about "life" has 4 chapter headings in French: Spring Summer Autumn & Winter - Derain's "Fauve" sketches illustrate the chapters & are typical of his heavier lines - bold & thickly rendered. A fine example of Fauvism in spirit & illustration. A movement said to have begun in June 1909 when Vlaminck first met Andre Derain at Chatou resulting in the formation of the school of Chatou & ultimately the birth of Fauve art - joined formatively by the likes of; Matisse Gaugin Van Dongen Camoin Dufy Marquet & others. The important collaboration between Derain & de Vlaminck was not a solitary happening as their association & friendship lasted a lifetime resulting in many important works. "Quand c'est le printemps et qu'on n'a pas d'argent ça a moins d'importance qu'a quarante ans On court après la blonde on prend la brun on a vingt ans aux prunes. François Bernouard unknown

193132306Paris: Librairie Stock 1931. 1931. Good. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND IMPORTANT ARTIST VLAMINCK - Octavo softcover bound in printed creamy white wraps. The front hinge is starting at the top and the pages are toned. Good.
First edition with "S.P." Service de Press printed on the spine.
Inscribed and signed by Maurice de Vlaminck on the front endpaper: "A Pierre Hudiat / Hommage de l'auteur / Vlaminck".
Along with Andre Derain and Henri Matisse Maurice de Vlaminck was one of the central figures of the Fauve movement. 1930007660Paris: Librairie Stock. Delamain et Boutelleau 1930. Limited Edition. Wraps. Slipcase. Chemise. Near Fine/Slipcase chemise: Fair. No. 220 of a total of 320 copies issued this one in a lower tranche on Velin d'Arches paper. 4to. 203 2 pp. Six plates of Vlaminck artwork. Plates counted in pagination. The book has a few stray fox marks including on the fore-edge. The ones on the fore-edge encroach onto the far edge of the flat part of the page as a slight rounded stain. But for the small number of fox marks anywhere and because the fox marks that are present in total seem relatively minor to us the book proper is in fine condition. Indeed with the wax paper dust jacket the book looks virtually untouched. The slipcase and chemise are another matter. The slipcase has fallen apart completely. We have all the pieces -- there is no loss whatsoever but the slipcase needs to be rebuilt. The chemise is intact having been repaired along its edges somewhat amateurishly. The tape used is visible along its outer edges for example and the marbled paper along these edges needs some attending to to secure it back onto the chemise boards. Librairie Stock. Delamain et Boutelleau unknown

Quarto: 28.5 × 23 cm; pp. 202 2. With initials ornaments and 6 original lithographs by Vlaminck.

Condition: Binding in very good condition despite some minor creases. Internally quite fresh and clean some foxing as usual to margins and edges. Overall a well-preserved copy.

Notes: Maurice de Vlaminck 1876–1958 was probably as great a writer as he was an artist. In his most important autobiographical work Tournant Dangereux Dangerous Corner he describes his path and his relationship to art in evocative texts based on a car journey. His credo was: "If you are a painter look only at yourself". What counts for him is reality in its historical moment. For him painting is the language of feelings. "I struck all the notes and translated all the feelings I could perceive into an orchestration of pure colours. I was a tender barbarian full of violence". The French poet and art critic Guillaume Apollinaire once described Vlaminck as "one of the most talented painters of his generation. His simple and intense technique" Apollinaire wrote "allows the lines their full freedom the volumes their full relief and the colours their full clarity their full beauty". Vlaminck illustrated Tournant Dangereux with six beautiful lithographs characteristic of the Fauvist landscape painter.
Librairie Stock paperback

194186962Rueil-la-Godelière Eure-et-Loir Rueil-la-Godelière 1941. Fine. Rueil-la-Godelière Eure-et-Loir Rueil-la-Godelière 16 Juillet 1941 15.50 x 19.50 cm deux pages sur un double feuillet Autograph letter dated and signed by Maurice de Vlaminck addressed from his house ""la Tourillière"" in Rueil-la-Godelière in Eure-et-Loir to his friend Francis Carco 31 lines in black ink on a double sheet. A central fold inherent to postal delivery light dampstains at head of the double sheet without any damage to the text of the letter. The painter shows himself deeply affected and saddened by his friend's refusal of a project involving them both: ""J'ai l'impression que tu ne dis pas la vérité. I have the impression that you are not telling the truth. These reasons you invoke to explain your refusal are not the real ones. You may have work but that has nothing to do with 'I am not good'"" He attempts to reassure Francis Carco convinced that his friend has been misinformed or influenced: ""Je peux t'affirmer que personne ne connait le manuscrit. ""I can assure you that no one knows the manuscript. In my opinion it is regrettable for both of us. My dear Carco people are awful!"" Without great resentment he invites him to his house in Eure-et-Loir at ""la Tourillière"": ""Viens donc dîner à la Tourillière. Vlaminck. P.S. Qu'est-ce que tu risques "" ""Do come and dine at la Tourillière. You won't waste your evening. Finally with all my friendship my two hands. Vlaminck. P.S. What do you risk"" but remains deeply troubled by his friend's rejection: ""Cette histoire m'agace. ""This whole affair annoys me. As for the play I don't care! But I would like to know what lies behind your refusal. What they told you!"" unknown
