Dark grey mottled cloth backed in black leather; oblong 178 x 124 mm; contains 8 highly skilled watercolor paintings plus a few hasty pencil sketches. Watercolors are dense haunting richly colored images of forest scenes tree branches boats ashore. Two of the paintings extend beyond the gutter and onto the facing page. Binding is shabby and broken happily so as these are begging to be displayed. <br/><br/> hardcover books

This narrative of travels in Northern Africa avoids political disccusions and instead focuses on everyday life and the character of the Maghrebi Arabs. Octavo two volumes: 304 p. and 261 p. with frontispieces. Full burgundy morocco bindings with black and brown leather spine labels elaborate gilt stamping five raised bands ornamental dentelles and cream endpapers. Additionally each volume features an original fore-edge painting: Table Mountain in South Africa on the first and Southampton Harbor on the second. Faint staining to the top edge in the final few leaves of the first volume. The front hinge in the first volume is just starting. NOTE ON HANBURY: Charlotte Hanbury could be one in the DNB with dates 1830-1900 born in Stoke Newington her autobiography published in 1901. Henry B. Brooke Gilpin 1853-1929 was vice president of the National Wholesale Drug Association and commodore of the Baltimore Yacht Club Maryland. He married Hattie Newcomer 1861-1942 daughter of Benjamin F.
