Ellis at The Georgian Press Westport CT. Christmas : Anno Mcmxxi." Quoted from the colophon.<p>The book designer and printer Richard Williamson Ellis 1895-1982 was inspired by Bruce Rogers to launch his own press in 1924. Initially located in New York Ellis moved The Georgian Press to a renovated barn in Westport Connecticut. During the period from 1924 through 1933 Ellis frequently collaborated with his friends especially the famous typographer Frederic Goudy. Faced with financial difficulties Ellis sold the press to George Macy of the Limited Editions Club and moved to Camden New Jersey with his wife in 1935. He took a position with Haddon Craftsmen and then Kingsport Press in Tennessee. He returned to New York to work as a consulting book printer. He worked for the Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia and again subsequently struck out on his own. A master of fine printing he was commissioned by the Free Library of Pennsylvania to produce and print their "Pennsylvania German Fraktur of the Free Library of Philadelphia" shortly before his death.<p>RARE. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - FLAWLESS COPY - 2 volumes in slipcase 260 pp. Overall 115 duotones 15 color plates; 8 1/4 x 10 in. -- The subject of Christs Passion preoccupied the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer 1471-1528 throughout his working life. He explored three primary concerns within this narrowly defined subject: how to imagine Christ as a man in a body how to inscribe himself Dürer into the image and how to account for his viewer in the scene. Because it spans his entire creative career Dürers Passion work not only charts his changing attitudes toward these issues it also provides a window onto his artistic development as a whole. The Essay volume includes an illustrated essay a list of the Passion series and related works and illustrations of related works. The Album volume includes illustrations of five of the Passion series: the Large the Green the Small the Engraved and the Oblong Passions. -- with a bonus offer-- . Univ paperback

19681196SB<p>"From the dust-jacket flap: "Durer made his journey to the Netherlands at the age of 50. It is described in his diary. Durer had with him on this trip what he refers to as <my little book>--in fact a sketchbook. All that has come down to us of this little book are 15 sheets of drawings--portraits animals architecture 27 drawings in all--executed in silverpoint but these constitute one of the greatest testimonies to the mature art of Durer. The silverpoint has always been the instrument of the great master; because of the special nature of the technique which does not allow the alteration or erasure of any stroke only a great master is able to set down his intention with the first stroke with precision and finality. The widely scattered leaves of the sketchbook were first brought together for facsimile publication in 1928 on the quartercentenary of Durer's death. This first German edition was followed by a Swiss German edition in 1960. The new edition with an English text makes use of a quantity of the illustration sheets printed in a combination of monochrome collotype and lithography that remain from the Swiss German reissue; for this reason only a limited number of copies are available."</p> Lund Humphries hardcover
