The first English edition first published in the original French in 1871 under the title 'Less Communeux 1871. Types Caracteres Costumes'. Illustrated by Bertall with forty hand coloured plates. Collated complete. A collection of illustrations from the renowned French illustrator and caricaturist from Charles Albert D'Arnoux otherwise known as 'Bertall'. The work provides a series of observations of communists in Paris with descriptions. While the work was not primarily political with Bertall claiming he had no political bias the illustrations are considered to be propagandistic depicting communists in a negative light. Externally faded to the spines and extremities of the boards with rubbing to the extremities and joints marks to the boards slight creasing to the rear and rear joint tender with front joints cracked and re-enforced. A UNIQUE SET OF BON-A-TIRER PROOFS B.A.T.s many signed by Bertall of the wood-engravings used in Balzac's "Petites misères de la vie conjugale" one of the truly great 19th-century French illustrated books. This set includes 60 proofs on Chinese paper of which 36 are SIGNED by Bertall to confirm his approval of the final image and one of which features a small ink sketch. There is no record of any other impressions of any of these prints on Chinese paper or of any signed impressions on any paper at all. Generally in excellent condition although a few are creased or spotted. 12.5 x 12 cm and smaller. UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT. IT IS EXTREMELY UNUSUAL TO FIND HAND-SIGNED PRINTS EARLIER THAN 1875. <br/><br/> Chlendowski unknown

This is also the first illustrated edition. Contemporary half blue shagreen over marbled paper boards spines slightly sunned in five compartments with thin raised bands decorated with gilt dots and compartments with triple blind-ruled frames gilt fleurons to centre marbled endpapers and pastedowns. A little foxing in some volumes a very small stain to page 119 of volume 4 another to page 321 of volume 8 a tear to half-title of volume 9 a small damp stain to corner of pages 449 and following of volume 10 stain to pp. 173-74 of volume 14 stains to pages 303 to 307 of vol. 16. The full set of 152 hors-texte plates by the best artists of the age including Bertall Daumier Gavarni Johannot Nanteuil as well as illustrations to text. Four rejected plates have been added bringing the number of plates in this copy to 156. There are so many reasons for emphasising the interest of this edition one of the most important in French literature. Having had a turbulent existence and confused and having been several times republished in a great number of copies it is very rare in its first form and in this first version even rarer in a contemporary uniform binding than with a modern binding and the wrappers preserved cf Clouzot.
