Plate 57 from the Robert Macaire 'Caricaturana' series. <br /> 'Confound it Mr. Dentist you have pulled out two good teeth and have left the two bad ones' Robert Macaire aside 'The devil' aloud 'No doubt and for good reasons there is always time to extract the bad ones ; as to the others they would have decayed and caused you pain. A false set will never make you suffer and it is of a better kind ; people wear nothing but that now'.From a series of lithographs that show the character Robert Macaire in a variety of guises. Macaire originally a character in a play is a swindler who takes on a number of professions such as journalist librarian and so on always ruthlessly pursuing personal gain. Macaire's character symbolised the mood in France at the time of the July Monarchy of the 1830s and 1840s when wealthy financiers and company owners dominated politics and looked after their own interests at the expense of others. In this print Macaire is in the guise of a dentist. CONDITION : There is some discolouration at the bottom of the sheet and a little in the title area. Some toning to the edges of the sheet. unknown

A fine copy of Philipon's profusely illustrated satirical magazine.It is a testament to Philipon's tireless satirical efforts that after the problems he experienced in editing La Caricature - constant harassment by the authorities numerous arrests and prosecutions - he could continue to publish and in a similar vein. Announced in the first livraison as consisting of a prospective 96 livraisons publication was curtailed after only 48. The illustrators used include several principally Grandville and Daumier employed by La Caricature as well as many making their names for the first time. Illustrators included as mentioned on the title pages Cham Daumier Dollet Eustache Forest Gavarni Grandville Eugène Lami Lorentz Plattier Tromolet Vernier and others. The spine and boards are a little rubbed but sound and holding well. There is foxing to the first and last few pages but most of the text block is clean. A nice copy of a rare item. Professional attentions would benefit item and its readership otherwise just be cautious when going through. The V. Hugo singleton is a curiosity quite a ferocious style; the Daumier are splendid; all inclusions are worthwhile and unusual. As is.
