Fine with Tarn's editorial markings throughout and occasional author's corrections in ink. <br /> <br /> Bartlett's magisterial study of William Everson based on original research as well as dozens of interviews during Everson's lifetime remains the standard biography of the poet. Bartlett a poet editor and Professor of English at the University of New Mexico is considered the greatest authority on Everson; among his numerous published books on the poet are the current title published by New Directions in 1988; William Everson: A Descriptive Bibliography 1977; Benchmark and Blaze: the Emergence of William Everson 1979 and several others. This one of three uncorrected pre-publication manuscripts of The Life is inscribed to Bartlett's friend and New Mexico colleague the poet-translator Nathaniel Tarn. Brother Antoninus Oct. 1988 Portland Oregon.†Beneath which is Bartlett’s inscription: “for Christopher Eskelli with great thanks for your help with this book. Lee Bartlett Portland.†Christopher Eskelli is included in the acknowledgments as having contributed to this biography via extended taped interviews with the author. Illustrated. Fine fresh copy in a fine dust jacket. William Everson 1912 - 1994 was one of the core members of what is known as the San Francisco Renaissance in poetry and was closely aligned with both Kenneth Rexroth and Robinson Jeffers. In 1951 he joined the Dominican Order in Oakland CA thus the name ‘Brother Antoninus’ and left it in 1969 following his heart marrying Susanna Rickson. He was poet-in-residence at the University of California Santa Cruz in the 1970s and 80s where he founded the Lime Kiln Press publishing his own poetry as well as that of Robinson Jeffers and Walt Whitman. The recipient was "the bluntest and most outspoken member of the 'kitchen cabinet' of old friends who have been longtime advisers to President Reagan" New York Times obituary. In 1939 the businessman Justin 1907-1984 married the actress Jane Bryan 1918-2009 Reagan's co-star in Girls on Probation 1938 Brother Rat 1938 and Brother Rat and a Baby 1940. The couple met regularly with Reagan and his first wife Jane Wyman whom he had met on the Brother Rat films and afterwards with Reagan's second wife Nancy. Their friendship lasted until Justin's death over four decades later and was significant - the Darts were partly responsible with other Southern California businesspeople in persuading and aiding Reagan to run for governor of California in 1966 and encouraged him to run for vice-president in 1976 and president in 1980. In Reagan's autobiography he recalls it was Justin who on a trip to England first introduced him to Margaret Thatcher American Life p. 204. Reagan awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 1987. Bruce Bartlett was a committed supporter of the supply-side model. Published in the early months of Reagan's presidency Reaganomics both outlines the supply-side theories and makes proposals for further reform. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in silver. Clark my first play but I hope not our last association. Sincerely Bartlett Cormack." With Clark's bookplate on the front pastedown. This play was a success on Broadway and was Edward G. Robinson's first starring role and was the basis for the silent film adapted by Cormack from his play and directed by Lewis Milestone in 1928 which was one of the first films nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1929. The film was remade in 1951 John Cromwell film noir starring actor Robert Mitchum. Clark was an exceptionally important figure in modern American drama aside from authoring many books he served as the longtime literary editor for the drama publisher Samuel French.
