1908122897London: Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press 1908. A proud Jewish father publishes for his children First and only edition. A truly sumptuous piece of private publishing produced as a gift for the author's children and grandchildren handsomely printed at the Chiswick Press and finely bound by an unnamed binder of real quality. Among the varied pieces is "A Dream by One who Dreamt It" a prose fantasy conceived at the time of the Dreyfus case of a Jewish state "a beautiful land of very vast extent" where Jews driven out from the civilized countries of Europe by "hatred and envy of the race" live in paradisal self-government. The volume carries the bookplate of Bernard Alexander Isaac 1871-1938. If he is one of the children for whom the book was printed then "Pater" was Frederick Simeon Isaac c.1829-1915. With his siblings Benjamin and Alexander Frederick was a partner in Isaac & Samuel a City of London firm with worldwide interests. He was also a director of several South American utility and finance companies. In the 1871 Census he was described as a "South American merchant" and in the 1901 Census as a "financial merchant". He left £630000 including a range of legacies to Jewish charities. The book is likely to have been printed in small numbers and is unsurprisingly rare. There are no copies listed on Library Hub and Library Hub lists only the Toronto Public Library copy. We were unable to trace any other copy in libraries or auction records. Tall octavo 247 x 184 mm. Photographic portrait of the author as frontispiece with tissue guard title printed in red and black decorative opening initials headpieces and culs-de-lampe. Finely bound in contemporary dark blue crushed morocco titles in gilt direct to spine gilt-ruled raised bands compartments and turn-ins ruled and richly decorated with foliate and circlet motifs in gilt boards panelled in single gilt rules with floral and repeat foliate motifs to corners green silk endpapers edges gilt unsigned but evidently quality work. Pictorial bookplate of Bernard A. Isaac to front pastedown. A few minor marks to covers else a fine copy printed on thick paper and handsomely bound. The Library's most important Hebrew illuminated manuscript is known as the "Washington Haggadah" because of its location in Washington D.C. A Haggadah the plural is haggadot is a liturgical work that is recited in the home at the festive evening meal of Passover in order to fulfill the biblical injunction Exodus 13:8 to recount the story of the Exodus to each generation. Haggadot are often illustrated the theory being that this will keep the children interested and awake during the reciting of the text. <br /> <br /> Completed on January 29 1478 the Washington Haggadah was signed by Joel ben Simeon a well-known scribe and artist responsible for more than a dozen other Hebrew illuminated manuscripts found in collections around the world. In addition to the full text of the Passover night liturgy the Washington Haggadah features stunningly intricate illuminated panels and a series of Passover illustrations that include depictions of "The Four Sons" "The Search for Leaven" and "The Messiah Heralded." The enduring popularity of Joel ben Simeon's miniatures is reflected in the many reproductions of his work that have appeared over the years in anthologies of Jewish art and manuscript painting. <br /> <br /> In 1991 the Library of Congress published this facsimile edition of the Washington Haggadah accompanied by a companion volume with a detailed scholarly description analysis and assessment of the manuscript. This edition faithfully preserves the original text with the Hebrew facsimile appearing in the original right-to-left orientation. It will be read and treasured by anyone interested in Jewish history medieval illuminated manuscripts and the history of the Haggadah. The Haggadah itself is bound in leather. Originally published in the U.S. in 1961 and newly illustrated by Simeon for this first British edition JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH was described in Allen & Unwin's foreword as Dahl's "first book for children" somewhat accurate if one disregards his earlier THE GREMLINS 1943 originally intended as the basis for a Disney film. <br /> <br /> Dahl's genius as a writer for all age groups lies in his refusal to strip his children's books of the pure unadulterated nastiness at the core of his most memorable adult short stories; sex is absent but the vulgarity and meanness in the darkness of the human heart is if anything greater and more fearsome here: for Dahl hatred of injustice is born early in a child's spirit and festers until it finds some awful Aunt-crushing catharsis. A circa 1914 facsimile of a work originally done in 7181 in the Byzantine calendar i.e. 1676 or 1677. Printed in black and red. Old leather covers with broken clasps. Rebacked much more recently. Entirety of the text is an archaic Russian Cyrillic script Russian Church Slavonic. Foliation with Cyrillic numerals. Some wear to boards. Written by one of the founder of the Pomor Old-Orthodox Church beliefs Simeon Denisov this work details the siege of Solovetsky Monastery by the Tsar Aleksey I 1668 to 1676. The monastery was attempting to resist the controversial mid 17th century liturgical and ritual reforms of the Tsar and the Patriarch Nikon. These reforms were an attempt to eliminate the differences between the Greek and Russian Orthodox churches while the monks and peasants of Solovetsky were fighting to preserve the Old Beliefs. Isolation and ample stores of food allowed the siege to last a long time but it was eventually ended when the monks were betrayed from within and most were killed. In the present work Wolbach and his co-authors definitively identified the human body louse as the vector for epidemic typhus. Working on behalf of the League of Red Cross Societies' Typhus Research Commission to Poland Wolbach and parasitologist John Todd carried uninfected lice to Poland to demonstrate that these insects transmit the typhus-causing bacteria Rickettsia prowazekii to human subjects. Wolbach."</p> <p> Clara Ricketts a senior assistant at the John Crerar Library in Chicago would naturally have been interested in Wolbach's work which built upon and extended her late brother's investigations.
