Heriot was liberated from Dachau concentration camp on April 2 1945 at age 50 reference available on request.<br /> <br /> Adolphe Willette original lithograph illustrated birth announcement showing a lovely large picture frame with the upper corner revealing a windmill and crescent moon and an infant at lower right. Signed in the plate at lower right.<br /> <br /> Willette 1857-1926 was a French caricaturist painter lithographer and architect of the Moulin Rouge whose many works in the illustrated press Le Pied de Nez le Courier Francais and Le Rire often appeared under various pseudonyms. He was active during the Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau period and was a member of the Cornet Society a group of artists musicians writers academics and playwrights who gathered at various restaurants around Montmartre. Known for his lithographs posters paintings and illustrations Willette was called the "Pierrot of Montmartre" because of his fascination with this comedia del'arte character. Willette's famous 'Parce Domine' painting with many Pierrot figures first decorated the Montmartre cabaret Le Chat Noir; it is now at the Montmartre Museum. Complete with 41 loose sheets as issued including pictorial title and preface by the author. Each plate engraved on chine. Linnen boards sl. scuffed on extremities but all in all in a very good condition. First plate browned and a moisture spot of appr. 10 x 5 cm not affecting the picture. Last plate somewhated browned. 189625811896. An engraved poster welcoming the new year of 1896. A naked woman representing 1896 is at the helm of a boat which has the debris of 1895 in its wake. Tipped onto white backing cardboard. Signed in the plate A. Willette. To the bottom right is 'Phg V. Michel'. The debris of 1895 includes the words 'Panama' and 'Arton'. These appear to relate to Émile Arton a Jewish financier who was arrested in November 1895 for his part in financing in the Panama crisis. Adolph Willette was strongly anti-Semitic. Poster is clean and tidy with no significant marks. Black and white. Overall in Very Good condition. Poster size: 610 x 460 mm 24 x 18 inches. Adolphe Léon Willette 1857–1926 was a French painter illustrator caricaturist and lithographer as well as an architect of the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret. Willette ran as an "anti-Semitic" candidate in the 9th arrondissement of Paris for the September 1889 legislative elections. Rare. Une affiche gravée accueillant le nouvel an 1896. Une femme nue représentant 1896 est à la barre d'un bateau qui a dans son sillage les débris de 1895. Renversé sur carton blanc. Signé dans la planche A. Willette. En bas à droite se trouve 'Phg V. Michel'. Les débris de 1895 comprennent les mots « Panama » et « Arton ». Celles-ci semblent concerner Émile Arton un financier juif arrêté en novembre 1895 pour son rôle dans le financement de la crise de Panama. Adolph Willette était fortement antisémite. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins laid paper mounted on Japan paper artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on verso; engraving preceded by a tissue guard captioned with the artist's name title and text. Lithograph inspired by a poem extracted from the collection Chatîments by Victor Hugo reproduced on the print's tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. A total of 100 prints were thus published covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This beautifully formatted print is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan paper. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a work in its own right. Its ink absorption quality and its affinity with colours also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified in the early 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and pasted on the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on the same level as the illustrated luxury book. An almost complete set of this rare satirical literary journal headed and illustrated by Adolphe Willette. 49 issues from 6 July 1888 to 20 September 1889 each comprising two folio leaves the first page with a lithograph by Willette some with caricatures on page three. With Emile Goudeau as its editor-in-chief this journal nominally published on Fridays though not always actually published then includes poetry ads and news in brief but its real value lies in the illustrations done exclusively for it by Willette. A little light foxing and small tears to margin not touching images or text. Adolphe Willette was an inseparable part of Montmartre where he was responsible for the decoration of a number of cabarets bistrots and the famous Moulin Rouge. A painter first and foremost he exhibited at the Chat Noir having helped to found it. He later worked with a number of newspapers including le Rire and lAssiette au beurre before establishing le Pierrot. A divisive figure he stood as an Anti-Semitic candidate in the municipal elections in Paris in 1889. He proclaimed himself first President of the Republic of Montmartre a philanthropic association aimed at helping the children of that quartier. unknown

An excellent complete set of the very scarce fin-de-siècle illustrated revue 'L'Escarmouche' with additional important ephemera and original material.Directed by Georges Darien the writer satirist and artist the anarchist 'L'Escarmouche' was short-lived even by the standards of the day appearing weekly for only three short months from November 1893 to January 1894 a very rare final number included here was issued as an afterthought and without illustration apart from the cover by Ibels in March 1894. Noted rather more for its illustration than any literary merit 'LEscarmouche' featured covers by Henri-Gabriel Ibels 4 René Georges Hermann-Paul 5 and Félix Vallotton 1.The illustration fine and typical examples from the French fin-de-siècle features 12 lithographs by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. OCLC reports a single complete set that at the Bibliothèque Nationale in France; sets without the final number are also scarce and we can only trace those at the Swiss Bibliothèque d'Art et d'Archéologie the National Library of Canada the National Gallery of Australia and Iowa only.not in Ray. hardcover
