This "Practical Design" monthly features the work of Oda Kazuma 1882-1956 in this its first issue. This issue features articles on the use of electric lights at night for advertising with a note at the end on some recent advertising posters that have appeared. Obviously a periodical by professionals for professionals in the design and advertising world. Not a world one usually thinks of Oda Kazuma belonging to but here he turns his talents at lithographic printmaking to more practical ends with sevarl examples of advertising designs and commercial art. Kyoto Unsodo Meiji 43 1910 An orihon in 3 volumes 27 X 19 cm with woodblock printed covers all in a later fitted clasped cloth chitsu case. Unsodo outdid itself in this early design effort. Dozens of double page horizontal designs which become large prints the paper size being 37.5 x 27 cm as well as circular and fan-shaped and single page designs too. Most in the neo-Rimpa style which Unsodo artists pioneered at the beginning of the last century - bold and lovely. A bit of browning and fading the covers show some wear but overall very good condition a very nice impression of this important set. Complete. One of the very best of the Unsodo design books which is very good indeed. unknown books

The Tomoye Press was Elder's collaboration with the eminent typographer and printer John Henry Nash 1871-1947 whose standards of quality were second to none. As Sekka's last work it crowns his remarkable career with a lovely evocation of Koetsu's Saga-bon. For more on this important work see Hillier's description on p.976 of the second volume of his ART OF THE JAPANESE BOOK. The condition is a bit better than average with relatively little of the offsetting from the prints to the poems that is usual in this book. Slight foxing and slight edgewear. The printing is very good the colors lovely. It is a very good copy overall. A good copy only: the extreme lower forecorners are a bit creased and occasionally ragged; the front wrapper has the lower extreme fore- corner chipped away and there is a short tear near the toe of the spine resulting in the loss of the extreme lower spine corner of the lower wrapper and last leaf; there is a small chip in the lower wrapper at the spine crown; there is an 11 cm internally mended tear in the rear wrapper up from the lower edge and another internally mended 7 cm tear in the fore-edge each with small chips associated; and one panel of the enormous center four panel gatefold is neatly separated along the fold; still a reasonably good copy of an issue seldom found in ideal condition. Founded by Maxim Gorky and published in the Soviet Union from 1930 to 1941 and 1949 under the general editorship of G. Piatakov. An important issue of this innovative periodical devoted to the Dnieprostroy hydroelectric project with the 'plan' of the issue by El Lissitsky and M. Alpert. The text is by Boris Agapov translated for this English version by D. S. Mirsky. Of special note are four preliminary pages in tribute to H. G. Wells. The photographic component drew on a number of official sources with additional special photography by Alpert and A. Shaykhet.
