Vintage coloring book featuring thirty different subjects from individual toys to full-page seaside landscapes issued in the shape of a traveling trunk covered with international hotel labels. The preface offers an introduction to mixing colors and technical tips for young painters. Subjects vary widely from realistic animals including a striking lobster to a dressed-up family of anthropomorphic mice from nursery scenes to depictions of outdoor sports and play. A charming survival. Single volume measuring 7 x 10 inches: 124. Original blue cloth spine stiff paper boards upper board color-printed to resemble a three-dimensional traveling trunk book trimmed in that shape. Text printed on one side only with thirty uncolored scenes facing their colored counterparts. 1997WRCLIT84821Menosha: Gilbert Paper Company 1997. Eleven folded folio broadsides 43 x 28 cm enclosed in printed wraparound band with tape seal. A couple of corners bumped otherwise near fine. A gathering of broadside flyers with design lettering and illustration executed by Edward Fella "lithographed on all 8 colors of Voice by Gilbert." The caption text by Fella indicates the flyers correspond to actual events but were created after the fact. Gilbert Paper Company located in Menosha Wisconsin ceased production in 2001 after being acquired by Fox Paper Company. The wraparound band indicates these were printed in Santa Clara Valley CA. Martin Pitts and Paul Delrue with prospectus. Paul Delrue b. 1944 bound his first book at the age of fifteen in 1959 and knew he had discovered his calling. He became an apprentice at the University College London from 1961-64 and worked there as a binder until 1971. He set up his own bindery in 1971 and in 1981 was elected a Fellow of the Society of Bookbinders having founded and served as chairman of the Chester and North Wales branch in 1979. Paul has earned numerous awards and honours including the Silver medal and three other awards in 1991 in The Bookbinding Competition. He was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in the same year; the following year he was awarded two Bronze medals in the prestigious Prix Paul Bonet. <br/><br/>Paul invented the lacunose style of binding which is masterfully shown in this work although he uses other methods as well. His work is highly prized and springs from within him; as he writes on his website "A book and its binding are inextricably linked - the one complements the other in a way which creates something more than just a book with an attractive cover. My design bindings draw on what a book says to me and how it inspires me emotionally." <br/><br/>The lovely Delrue binding perfectly complements the story by The Hon. Roden Noel 1834-1894. First printing with Margaret Armstrong's binding design duodecimo size 144 pp. The designs of Margaret Armstrong 1867-1944 utilising the Art Nouveau style and floral patterns were a sensation in the publishing business; Armstrong created over 270 book designs often for the works of well-known authors such as Charles Dickens Robert Louis Stevenson and George Washington Cable. In addition to designing books Armstrong wrote books as well including a comprehensive guide to wildflowers in the American West which she also illustrated.<br/><br/>"The Song of the Cardinal" is a novel by acclaimed writer Gene Stratton Porter 1863-1924 who in addition to writing best-selling works of fiction also contributed pieces to notable magazines such as "McCall's" and "Good Housekeeping". Nichols contribution is a witty piece called "On Discovering that Jane Austen was One's Great-Great-Great-Aunt". Hammond does not appear; it seems that Nichol's inscription to Hammond is his typically arch way to perhaps ridicule the editorship of the book for not including an article that Hammond may have submitted.
