A scarce copy of this extensive history of the Wedgwood family many members of which are linked to the family's prominent pottery firm. The first edition of this scarce volume. In the original cloth binding. A substantial history of the Wedgwood family the name of which is largely connected to the English fine china porcelain and luxury accessories manufacturer founded in 1759 by English potter and entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece folding map thirty-seven plates and numerous vignettes. Collated complete. This account written by his great-great grandson Josiah C. Wedgwood traces the ancestral history of this name back to its earliest record in 1299 with other members discussed including Richard Wedgwood I of Mow Gilbert Wedgwood and Aaron Wedgwood as well as a chapter on unidentified members. Josiah C. Wedgwood was a British Liberal and Labour politician and prominent single-tax activist. In the original cloth binding. Externally with damp stains to the boards. Rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Hinges are starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. First edition thus with Raverat's enigmatic illustrations. This copy inscribed by the author and poet Walter de la Mare to the front free endpaper : 'To H and M. Nicholson with affectionate remembrances from W de l M Christmas 1949'. An Arabian Nights-style tale originally written by the illustrator's great uncle Harry Wedgwood for his children. Wedgwood was the grandson of the famous potter Josiah Wedgwood and brother-in-law of Charles Darwin. The story was originally published in 'The Family Tutor' in 1852 and was later privately printed in 1887. The story follows a little princess who comes into possession of a magic ring allowing her to communicate with birds. Walter de la Mare greatly admired Raverat's work and the pair later collaborated on his 1942 publication 'Crossings: A Fairy Play' Faber 1942. A lovely copy with these charming illustrations. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Dark blue solid presentation case embossed 'Wedgwood' in gilt with dark blue velvet base internally and cream padded lid which is slightly spotted towards hinge but overall in very good condition. Within sits a pale blue and white Jasperware by Wedgwood oval medallion cameo or plaque of Sir Winston Churchill produced to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of this birth: born 30th November 1874. Measures 11.5 cm high with a raised border of laurel leaves. To the reverse is inscribed 'To commemorate the centenary of the birth of SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL 30th November 1874. Number 732 in a limited edition of 1000'. Below is a Wedgwood factory stamp. Included is a small plastic wallet in very good condition containing an authentication certificate signed by the Chairman of Josiah Wedgwood and Sons Ltd alongside a small paper advertisement for an additional 5 special items produced by the company to commemorate the centenary. The presentation case and wallet come inside their original brown cardboard box labelled and numbered 732. Dame Cicely Veronica Wedgwood 19101997 was a distinguished British historian known for her vivid narrative histories of seventeenth-century Europe. Wedgwood was born in Stocksfield Northumberland on 20 July 1910. She was the only daughter of Sir Ralph Wedgwood Bt a railway executive and his wife Iris Wedgwood née Pawson a novelist and travel writer. Her brother was the politician and industrialist Sir John Wedgwood. Veronica Wedgwood was a great-great-great-granddaughter of the potter and abolitionist Josiah Wedgwood. Her uncle was the politician Josiah Wedgwood later 1st Baron Wedgwood. Educated at Somerville College Oxford she gained wide acclaim for works such as The Thirty Years War and studies of the English Civil War. Her clear literary style made complex history accessible to general readers. She was elected to the British Academy and was made a Dame in 1968. Wedgwood was a lesbian: her partner of almost seventy years Jacqueline Hope-Wallace died 2011 was a fellow graduate of Lady Margaret Hall and had a significant career in the British civil service. Wedgwood and Hope-Wallace together owned a country house called Whitegate near Polegate in Sussex. In her last years Wedgwood suffered from Alzheimer's disease and she died on 9 March 1997 at St Thomas' Hospital in London. unknown
