No. 200 of 320 copies on paper duodecimo size 49 pp. Edmund Spenser 1552/3 to 1599 is probably best known for his epic poem "The Faerie Queene" an ode to Elizabeth I. Even today he is considered one of the greatest poets of the English language. <br/><br/>This work "The Wedding Songs" is a publication uniting two works which were published a year apart both dealing with love and romance.<br/><br/>According to "Chanticleer" this is the first work of the Press to be illustrated with wood-engravings; however they go on to state that "there is no great feeling of harmony between the engravings and the type" p. 16. We find the three wood-engravings charming; Ethelbert White 1892-1972 was a founding member of the English Wood Engraving Society beginning his career with water colour but being introduced to wood-engraving in 1920. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Quarter linen white paper spine label with black lettering blue paper sides over boards fore- and bottom edges uncut the frontispiece one of three wood engravings and the only one in three colours rust green and yellow the other two only in rust; Caslon type on hand-made unbleached Arnold paper duodecimo size 7 3/8" by 4 1/2" pagination: 1-8 9-46 47 final wood-engraving 48 colophon 49 publisher's device; no. 200 of the 320 copies on paper per the colophon; per the bibliography there were 350 copies on paper there were an additional 25 copies on Japanese vellum. One of 160 copies octavo size 55 pp. The thirteenth publication from The Allen Press this story by Honore de Balzac 1799-1850 was originally titled "Maitre Cornelius" and first appeared in 1831 in the "Revue de Paris"; it was published in book form in 1832. Balzac was a prolific French novelist and playwright perhaps best remembered today for "Eugénie Grandet" his first bestseller; in this famous wayward love story set in fifteenth-century France Marie de Saint-Vallier daughter of Louis XI is unhappily married and becomes entangled in an unusual love affair. <br/><br/>The book features four wood engravings by the incomparable Mallette Dean 1907-1975 painter and illustrator who worked for most of his career in San Francisco on projects such as the WPA Mural Project the murals in Coit Tower and for fifteen years illustrated books for the Grabhorn Press and other Bay-Area presses such as the Allens'. One of 175 copies quarto size 146 pp. Marie-Henri Beyle 1783-1842 is likely best remembered today for his novels "Le Rouge et le Noir" and "La Chartreuse de Parme" and is considered one of the earliest authors of realism. Stendhal saw much of the Europe of his day; as part of the Napoleonic army he participated in the 1812 invasion of Russia and the retreat therefrom; served as the French consul in parts of Italy and eventually moved to Paris being buried in Montmarte. <br/><br/>Stendhal's "Journals" provide a fascinating glimpse not only into some of the places to which he travelled but more importantly into his inner thoughts; he was one of the Allens' "esteemed authors" and they were excited at the chance to publish an excerpt of his "Journals" when approached with the idea by Professor Francis Carmody. <br/><br/>As stated in the Allen Press bibliography "this was our fourth edition to be produced entirely by hand with hand-crafted materials throughout. We were now convinced that this method was our proper métier - that the handpress is the most satisfactory instrument in a chimerical attempt at the craftsmanship standards set by Kelmscott Doves and Ashendene presses" p. 39. One of 400 copies printed by the Grabhorn Press with the prints culled from the private collection of Edwin and Marjorie Grabhorn. The Grabhorns produced three such books the first focusing on figure prints and the second on landscape. One of sixty numbered copies in addition to twenty-five copies numbered in Roman signed and dated in the margin by the artist. Printed in Paris in the Atelier of Georges Leblanc on hand made paper from Papeteries de Rives. Scanavino 1922 - 1986 who after a figurative start to his work rapidly progressed with a personal aesthetic partaking of elements of cubism. He took part in several exhibitions including the Venice Biennale 1950 1954 1958 and 1966. He also was the subject of several solo exhibitions starting in Genoa in 1948 through to his final exhibition in Rome's Quadriennale in 1986. One of 240 copies duodecimo size 126 pp. "Woodwork" contains twenty-one wood engravings of tools by the inimitable Eric Gill 1882-1940; a highly regarded printmaker sculptor and typographer as well as a complicated man Gill provided illustrations for numerous fine press publications by the Golden Cockerel Press and the Saint Dominic's Press as well as with Pepler under the imprint of the St. Dominic's Press.<br/><br/>An informative look at the art of carpentry by craftsman-woodworker Arthur Romney Green 1872-1945 who like Gill and Pepler was influenced by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. VG but with soiling to covers where glassine was lacking minor age toning to extremities of some pages not bad overall a tight copy that could have been stored better. The front cover is slightly cattywampus from the two extra sets of engravings being inserted in the front of the book as might be expected. Printed wraps with glassine remnants on inside flaps. 24 pp. 15 engravings etchings withing the text and two extra sets of these illustrations each set representing a different state are included only 20 such sets were issued of the overall edition of 430 copies. Text is in French. The book itself has been printed on Imperial Japon and the extra engraving printed on Imperial Japon and on Holland Van Gelder it appears from the colophon and limitation at the rear of the book. Quite rare as a result of this limited configuration. Each set of plates is wrapped in glassine and the extremities of these plates show age-toning or light soiling.
