This book is generally regarded as one of the finest from the press which is known for the excellence of its letterpress printing and book design.<br /> <br /> The edition size was 270 copies of which this is one of 60 deluxe copies bound in quarter-leather and paper printed with an engraved design by Roy. These copies numbered with Roman numerals are signed by both Roy and Roethke who died soon after the printing was completed. Roethke won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for poetry. First edition first printing deluxe issue. A fine copy no. XXX of 60 signed by Roethke and Roy. Very good condition. A fantastic collaboration of art and poetry. Henry Beissel a Germany born poet writer and translator survived the second World War as a youth and emigrated to Canada in 1951. This collaborative work between him and Dale Alpen-Whiteside a Manitoba-born painter and sculptor now residing on Hornby Island in British Columbia. This work reflects the influence of moraine landscape in Eastern Ontario on their works. The poems are divided into four sections as i. seeds ii. roots iii. flowers and iv. leaves setting out four seasons in a striking harmony with warm and cold colours used in the prints. 1991 Ayorama Publications paperback

Gilt ruled turn-ins. top edge gilt and others uncut. 3 maps by Mina Greenhill and 10 wood engravings by Clifford Webb 8 full page. Some discolouration and light marking to the outer fore edge of the front board and some light fading to the outer fore edge of the rear cover with a neat previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
