Each of the ten engravings shows a stage in the production of silk. The two leaves of engravings Plates 25 and 26 were published as part of Du Halde's account of China included in an important 18th century compendium of travel writing: "A New General Collection of Voyages and Travels" known as the Astley Collection for its publisher. . hardcover

First edition first issue with "post est" error in the Caesar medallion on page 108 of Volume II. In a lavish full brown morocco binding with five raised bands and ornate gilt stamping to spine borders on covers wide turn-ins and beautifully patterned endsheets; all edges gilt. Near Fine with a light amount of rubbing to joints spines lightly faded a scuff to the front cover of Volume II and small former owner bookplates of noted collector Abel E. Berland to the front pastedowns. Pine's Latin text was based on Talbot's 1699 edition and is remarkable for being entirely illustrated with engraved copper plates throughout the text. Printed in color and delicately finished by hand the series stands among the earliest triumphs of color printing and marks the first published collection to feature the work of George Dionysus Ehret one of the eighteenth century's most admired botanical artists. Other artists/engravers included in this work are Bartholomaus Seuter Johann Elias Ridinger and Johann Jakob Haid. Ex libris with the motto "Gaudet Tentamine Virtus Strength Rejoices in the Challenge ". This was engraved by John Thomson d. 1847 the principal engraver at Belfast. Note: this aristocratic bookplate in a break with tradition states "Drawn & Engraved by J. Thomson Belfast adding the first four words ". Discreetly signed on the title-page by William Legg likely the master of Malone House in Belfast and High Sheriff of County Antrim . <br/><br/>Blind Jack blind since the age of 6 was in the public notice as "a most EXTRAORDINARY CHARACTER." Remarkably hew was the first professional road builder in the industrial Revolution. Undaunted he also drove stagecoaches twice a week although I do not know how. This was the only 18th century edition of this biography. E. and R. Peck hardcover
