Horizontal and vertical fold.Caricature of the July Monarchy’s repressive measures against workers’ uprisings in Lyon and Paris, the so-called ‘April insurgents’. Louis-Philippe is compared to the late mediaeval king Louis XI, notorious for his cunning and cruelty. The print represents a pseudo- mediaeval execution scene with Liberty in a white dress and red cap standing in front of the gallows flanked by jailors. Louis-Philippe wearing a helmet with chain-mail is shown from behind standing on top of the dungeons of Ste Pelagie giving final instructions. To the left, lecherous monks and gloating courtiers are looking on; to the right a moustachioed Talleyrand dressed as a cardinal is in attendance with other ministers in ancient dress or armour. His surgical shoe is wrongly shown on his left foot. Armed mounted guards and a large fortress in the background complete the scene.

Mortier, maréchal d'Empire et alors président du Conseil, homme dont la grande taille n'annonçait pas une intelligence à la hauteur - "dans les maisons fort élevées, le dernier étage est toujours fort mal meublé" selon le mot de Talleyrand rapporté dans "La Caricature" du 18 décembre 1834, p. 1720 - est représenté en mortier crachant une pluie de décorations. Louis-Philippe en artilleur déclenche le feu. La planche ridiculise le président du Conseil et dénonce un système d'achat de suffrages par distribution de "croix, de pensions, de faveurs de toute sorte" (in explication). Notons que le pantalon de Louis-Philippe est raccommodé par une pièce de tissu sur laquelle est inscrit "CHARTE" au niveau du postérieur du souverain.
