The inscription is undated but most likely dates from the mid to late 1930's. Damage to lower left corner else VG Montgomery 1904-1981 began his acting career in 1929 and has the distinction of having played both Lord Peter Wimsey in 1940 "Haunted Honeymoon" based on BUSMAN'S HONEYMOON and Philp Marlowe in 1947 "Lady in the Lake". He also directed and starred in one of the great film noirs of the forties "Ride the Pink Horse" 1947 based on the Dorothy B. Hughes novel. Watson was a member of the notable Watson family of photographers that has flourished in Los Angeles for nearly a century. He was one of the first staff photographers at the Los Angeles Times and covered notable stories throughout the twenties paperback

Publisher's reddish-brown leather titled in gilt on spine. . Octavo. Set in Poliphilus and Blado and printed on handmade paper at the Press of Hollycrofters. Some edgewear and smudging. Toning to edges. A very good copy. We could not find much information on the Hollycrofters. Their publications date from 1929 to 1958 with most dating from the 1930s. Their other titles include Lucile Phillips Morrison's Doll Dreams 1932 which compiled short fiction by children with illustrations by California artists like Paul Landacre and Millard Sheets. They also published books with a Western Americana interest including Indians of Death Valley by Lydia Clements 1953 and Orphans of the Desert by Leo Papiano 1929 which was one of their earliest publications.</p> Press of Hollycrofters, hardcover

Photo album measuring 9 ¼ x 11 ¼ inches containing forty-seven photographs mainly 4 x 5 inches and smaller with some 8 x 10. Most photos loosely affixed with some having detached. Overall excellent. An album of photographs of African American models from the 1950s and 1960s many with stamps verso from Ophelia DeVore’s Grace del Marco Modeling Agency. DeVore’s was among the first agencies for African American models and was highly influential with talent including the first Black supermodel Helen Williams Shaft actor Richard Roundtree and pioneering actresses Diahann Carroll and Cicely Tyson. Identified models in this album include Trudy Daniels Haynes and Lourdes “Lulu†Guerrero. Guerrero was a cover girl for Ebony and Jet magazines and had a role on The Jackie Gleason Show in 1958 making her one of the first Black women to have a role as a regular performer on national television. Trudy Haynes had a brief modeling career before becoming the first African American TV weather reporter working with WXYZ-TV in Detroit in 1963. There is also a photograph of radio DJ Pat Connell; though not a fashion model Connell was the first African American hired as a staff announcer by CBS. 1987127832Marilyn Monroe 1987. Very Good. Original cardboard movie standee of Marilyn Monroe circa 1987 reprints a familiar image from the release of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" 1953 where she dances in a similar dress. She wears this dress too in the the film and the standee is cropped from an actual press photo of Marilyn walking with Jane Russell. Bernard of Hollywood took photographs of Marilyn in the same dress but vintage standees from these photos are uncommon. Corrugated cardboard 1/8-inch printed recto 72 inches tall 22 inches base 11 inches head. Very Good Plus overall a few small bruises light bend to the neck and to the shoulder area brief edge bumps slight overall concavity faint stains on the verso. Support stand intact and strong. Original two-page typed letter signed to producer Fred Roos from screenwriter Carl Gottlieb on Gottlieb's letterhead dated May 12 1976.<br /> <br /> Gottlieb best known as the co-screenwriter along with author Peter Benchley for Steven Speilberg's "Jaws" 1975 writes cordially to Francis Ford Coppola's long-time producer Fred Roos on location in the Philippines working on "Apocalypse Now" regarding the "Coppola Company's" Zoetrope Studios sponsorship on Gottlieb's unproduced project "My Country" which Gottlieb notes has been shopped to the major studios without commitment.<br /> <br /> Gottlieb's letter also notes meeting Teri Garr and Richard Dreyfuss at Steven Speilberg's house "noodling" on the script for "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" a week prior to the commencement of shooting in Wyoming and Alabama. <br /> <br /> An insightful look into the latter third of the New Hollywood Cinema era and the commencement of the "summer blockbuster" era.<br /> <br /> 7.25 x 10.5 inches. A lightly handled copy with some minor edge wear minor rubbing to the cloth and a few tiny tears to the cloth without dust jacket. The novel relates the life of Los Angeles newspaper reporter Will Pence who finds his material in the life of both the lowly and the famous. In the novel is a very thinly veiled portrait of the great Hollywood director Erich Von Stroheim whom Ryan knew intimately and he played an officer in Von Stroheim’s The Merry Widow 1925 and appeared as the Archbishop in The Wedding March 1928. Ryan went on to write for Hollywood films from the 20s into the 1940s. The title of this novel refers to the elevated railroad in Los Angeles that traveled up and down one uphill city block and had the distinction of being the shortest railroad in the world. Photo-illustrated throughout with portraits of silent film actors directors producers and others and containing numerous advertisements for Los Angeles businesses and services most with some connection to the film industry. Scarce with only two copies in OCLC. <br /> <br /> The Photoplayer's Club was a short lived social club for both men and women that had members from throughout the motion picture industry including "actors directors camera men technical men owners manufacturers and managers" and sought the provide a space where they could meet "in 'clubby' equality" and "may talk shop may eat drink and make merry." <br /> <br /> As such the program provides a broad survey of both the major and minor players in the earliest days of the film industry as it established itself in Hollywood with each photograph identified with a caption and most actors and directors grouped with the studios or film production companies they were associated with. <br /> <br /> 12 x 9 inches in brown titled wrappers. A large illustrated compendium advertising forthcoming Paramount films aimed at cinema exhibitors. The long roll call of films and stars includes Harold Lloyd the Marx Brothers Marlene Dietrich "Blonde Venus" the Ernst Lubitsch production "Not Married" now known as "Design for Living" Cecil B. DeMille's "The Sign of the Cross" Maurice Chevalier Gary Cooper Helen Hayes Talullah Bankhead "The Glass Key" "If I Had a Million" "Lives of a Bengal Lancer" "The Lusitania Secret" "The Song of Songs" "Girl Without a Room" "No Bed of Her Own" and many more. Other advertisements splash only the title and that the actors will be "chosen from" a given list of stars an artefact of the studio system of signing actors. The images are very striking: for example a full-page illustration of Marlene Dietrich signed Hans Flato for a film called "Promised" and an array of vampish women handsome men historical heroes and crime capers. Each advertisement is lavishly illustrated often with a double page colour spread. Interestingly some of the films announced appear to have never been made at least in that form: for example 'Blood and Sand' set in Spain and starring Cary Grant and Tallulah Bankhead or "The West Pointer" starring "handsome he-man Cary Grant" as "a famous Indian ! athlete". These advertisements show a glimpse into an alternative history one for example with what would have been the first filmed adaptation of Karel Capek's play "R.U.R." about robots directed by Rouben Mamoulian or which would have given Dorothy Arzner an additional directing credit for "The Mirrors of Washington" never filmed. Apart from the advertisements there is also a section dedicated to photographs and a brief biography e.g. Marlene Dietrich Gary Cooper Carole Lombard Sylvia Sidney Miriam Hopkins Randolph Scott and Cary Grant. and section about the studio and highlighting promotions available to Paramount film exhibitors. Both albums illustrated with numerous leaves of mounted color cigarette cards of actors and actresses from the early years of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Each album also has plates of color illustrations taken from scenes of famous films. All of the films shown in these two albums were released in 1931 or 1932. The color cigarette cards feature actors and actresses from Germany the United States Poland Mexico and from other countries. A Very Good or better example. <br /> <br /> The happy ladies are jumping on an early patented version of the pogo stick notably without handles. Based on the description typed on the verso the pogo riders are Catherine Hughes and Dorothea Kent both Universal Studios actresses in Hollywood. Hughes was known for starring in early Westerns including two Gene Autry films. Kent was less well-known but held roles in Pin Up Girl Some Blondes are Dangerous and Million Dollar Legs. unknown
