The first edition of this very scarce work in the publisher's original blind-stamped cloth binding with renewed end papers. Susan Warner 1819-1885 was an American Presbyterian writer of religious fiction children's fiction and theological works. She often wrote under the pseudonym of Elizabeth Wetherell. Many of her novels went into multiple editions but her first The Wide Wide World 1850 was the most popular. This volume is one of her novels concerning the Glen Luna family; it is a very scarce work to see. A fourteen-page publisher's catalogue to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding with renewed end papers. Externally smart with fading to the spine and shelf wear to the extremities. Spine is a little cocked. Internally firmly bound. The contents are surprisingly clean and bright this dealer suspects the pages were . washed before rebinding. Tthe fold-out hand-colored map is also clean and bright and without any damage 631 pages of text illustrated from 200 woodcut engravings and the hand-colored fold-out map. The edges of the text block are marbled. A small quarto of 9 by 5 1/2 inches with the leather worn through over the front and rear joints the lower edges of the boards and the tips of the boards. There is an early prior owner's name written in ink at the upper edge of the title page. The contents are generally foxed on the margins and the fold-out hand-colored map is partially tanned it is in undamaged condition. 624 pages of text illustrated from 200 woodcut engravings and the hand-colored fold-out map. 1871328Chicago: Warner Higgins and Beers 1871. 16 1/4 x 13 1/4 inches. Good condition having marginal staining lower left without incursion into printed image. this is a medium rare map being published in only one year 1871. The map's a superb cartographic artifact. It was printed in black and white and colored by hand at the time of publication. There are two maps on one sheet each map on a different axis of 90 degrees. The Washington and Oregon map is stunning. It has fine hatching for the coastal range defining the geography of settlement. On the western face of the range to the Pacific Ocean there is a highly developed county system indicating significant settlement. Less dense is the areas east of the range. The Territir of Alaska is finely detailed having been acquired by Seward just four years earlier. Warner and Beers continued publishing after 1871. Higgins was dropped from listing in the title the following year. For its time this map represents the highest standard of cartographic productions. Warner, Higgins and Beers unknown

No indicators of a reprint publisher. The reverse of the title page indicates the original printer which usually is where the reprint publisher would put their name. Also the inclusion of a color map which does not exist in the photos I have seen of the reprint. Very Solid Binding. An octavo measuring 8 3/4 by 5 1/4 inches with the leather at the head of the spine worn down to the text block and shallow chipping of the leather at the heel of the spine. There is also considerable foxing throughout the pages but none so bad as to render the text unreadable. 576 pages of text illustrated with a frontispiece and throughout the text with line drawings and wood cut engravings by the author. Signed. 8vo; 7 1/2†x 5 1/8†rebound in 3/4 tan calf over marbled boards with gilt rule to the edges; 346 pages with frontispiece and other illustrations throughout; the front hinge has been very discreetly reinforced.~~Tipped in is an ALS from Charles Dudley Warner with interesting content regarding the naming of a character in the book. The letter is addressed to Eleanor Kilham a person of interest in her own right. A medical doctor engaged in private practice in New York at the outbreak of World War I she sailed for France on the first ship out after the sinking of the Lusitania. For her work in France she received the Medaille d’Honneur and the Medaille de Reconaissance d’Honneur. After the war she devoted herself to welfare work in New York see New York Times April 6 1937.~~The letter is dated Hartford Aug. 10 1893. It reads: “Dear Elenaor A thousand thanks for your suggestion about Jane Brown. I always did hate it. The confounded plebeian “ sound of it hampered me. Your word has given me the stimulus “ to eradicate it. Can you suggest a fitting name How would Ellen Leigh or Emiliy Leigh do It must be as un- common and yet dignified.â€~~The protagonist is in fact named Ruth Leigh and one supposes that Eleanor Kilham had something to do with that.~~~~. Twain's satirical first novel written in collaboration with his friend Charles Warner 1829-1900 a book whose title and theme remain relevant today. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition in a mixed state. Points that are either present or lacking include: list of illustrators on title page includes "White" with Lockwood electrotyper on verso but the date of publication is 1874; the name "Eschol Sellers" changed in later editions remains on p. vii; there is no "Halleluyah" on p.246; Dr. Jackson on p. 280 is accompanied by a period; and p. 403 has no illustration. The fold-out map at p. 246 is present. The binding is full leather with four bands and is a bit dry and flakey; the spine label black with gilt lettering is rubbed but still readable. The text is clean and bright; foxing is minimal; most of the pages however are browned at their edges. Withal a decent copy of this wonderful and important book. Through interpreters Warner spoke with everyone he could to soak up as much of the Egyptian life as possible while he traveled around what was at the time considered an unknown part of the world to many Americans.
