Calves pates the skin of the forehead was used for sizing paper. The original newspaper disbound from a folio. 4 pp. on laid paper vg; some scattered foxing and a sm. waterstain at the bottom edge. A fascinating paper with news of Napoleon's maneuverings against the British; reports of Napoleon's "Non-Intercourse Law" which blockaded most of the ports of Europe for years and started many small wars including our 'War of 1812'; and an editorial critical of Madison's invasion of Spanish Florida left more or less unattended while Napoleon pestered the Spanish government. <br/> <br/> Hudson & Goodwin unknown

18108937New Haven: Oliver Steele 1810. Periodical. Good. The original newspaper 4 pp. on laid paper disbound from a folio. Good; has old stains heavy edgewear several words obscured by sm. blots on p. 3-4 and a hole through the upper left corner that affects several more. The front page prints part 1 of a long article on Andrew Jackson's relations with Britain describing the conditions that soon would lead to the 'War of 1812'. Also an article on French conscription and references to American ships being taken in Tunis this was the precursor to the Marines' landing on "the Shores of Tripoli" and a brief notice of the condition of the Cherokee Indians listing possessions that included 583 Negro slaves. <br/> <br/> Oliver Steele unknown
18038839NY: Michael Burnham 1803. Periodical. Good. The original paper letterpress printed on laid paper good plus; the bottom left corner is missing no loss of text and there are some black smudges on the inner pages but all is legible. Left side shows signs of removal from a folio binding. No foxing. Most interesting is an article on page 2 on the execution in Britain of Edward Marcus Despard 'The Unfortunate Colonel Despard'. He was hanged then beheaded with his head held up for exhibit before about 20000 spectators. There seems to be no evidence even today regarding his guilt or innocence of the treason charge. The articles prints his last words in which he declares his innocence and closes: "May it be the last account of such a nature that shall appear in this or any other paper!" Originally Despard and his 'conspirators' were sentenced to be drawn and quartered as well; the editor was spared describing that. The last page contains a silly poem recent acts of the Seventh Congress under Jefferson land sales and writs of attachment. <br/> <br/> Michael Burnham unknown

The original newspaper disbound from a folio. 8 3-column pp. on laid paper vg-; there are a few lt. brown stains a thin waterstain along the left margin and creases from having been folded in sixths. Remarkably bright and easily read. An editorial by 'Obed' an account of Louisiana at that time this meant the entire Louisiana Purchase and a number of reprints from other papers. Article II is a speech by John Leach M.P. on Limitations to the Royal Authority. Article III is related to mining; New Theory of the Formation of Veins. Article IV treats Liberty of the Press with wit and humour. Travels in the South of Spain In Letters by William Jacob M.P.comprises Article V. The sixth article is Burney's Tentamen a study of the metrical remains of the dramatic poets. A History of Arithmetic by M. Peyrard comprises Article VII. Has a to me incomprehensible editorial about Jacobins and Jefferson rumors of Napoleon's invasion of Holland a report of 2 ships captured by pirates at Guadaloupe and an interesting bit from New orleans a 'remonstrance': ".that the act passed by last Congress for the government of Louisiana be annulled and particularly that part respecting the slave trade:- that the French language be preserved in all our judiciary and civil proceedings; that we be immediately acknowledged as a State and enjoy as such the privilege of appointing our own Executive Council. <br/> <br/> John Park unknown

18618855NY: NY World 1861. Periodical. Good. The original newspaper letterpress printed on plain white paper 8 pp. unopened still folded at top so that pp. 2-3 and 6-7 are at first hidden. Much news from the beginning of the Civil War including Gen'l Irwin McDowell's report of the Battle of Bull Run now called the First Battle of Bull Run. McDowell was soon replaced by Lincoln after botching this battle. Condition is good only; There is a printer's flaw at the bottom of p.1 with the loss of maybe 20 words; there is a great deal of edgewear and brown splotches staining the paper in many places. Images are largely superb and without edgewear while the four-flap portfolio shows mild edgewear. Incredibly uncommon complete set of this large grouping of reproductions of steel-engraved portraits of a wide array of mostly 19th century world notables -- mainly head-and-shoulders some half-length most with facsimile signature underneath many based on photographs and many engraved by noted English-American artist Timothy Cole. Contemporary brown half morocco over marbled boards spines with raised bands gilt lettered direct to two panels endpapers and all edges marbled. Numerous black and white illustrations. Even fading to the spines rubbing to the extremities four volumes with neat joint repairs with two of these volumes - VI and XVI - slightly worn at the head and foot respectively a very good set overall. Founded by George Murray Smith of Smith Elder & Co. as a rival to Dickens' "All The Year Round" William Makepeace Thackeray was appointed as its first editor. This set contains the first ten years of its existence which also saw the high-water mark of its popularity providing the first appearance in print for many literary works by some of the most notable writers of the day including the first serialisations of Anthony Trollope's "Framley Parsonage" 1860 George Eliot's "Romola" 1862-63 and Elizabeth Gaskell's "Wives and Daughters" 1864-66. Although sales dwindled after 1870 the magazine still serialised important works by the likes of Joseph Conrad Thomas Hardy and Henry James in its later years. London: Smith, Elder & Co. unknown
