1829008474Richmond VA/ New York / Philadelphia : Various 1829. A collection of small religious books two were published Richmond both are Psalms and Hymns 1867 the rest NY 3 Bibles 1829 1864 1869 or Philadelhia Book of Common Prayers 1868. Range in height from 3 7/8" to 5 5/8". Together with an Autograph Book no publisher or date but inscription dated 1866. All were owned by a Southern minister in Memphis named J. O.James Owen Stedman and his daughter Ella Owen Stedman. Stedman was pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Shelby County from 1854-1868. He then helped to found the Alabama Street Presbyterian Church in Memphis in 1868. The autograph book with one page presentation inscription to Stedman dated Dec. 1866 with ten signatures of elders and deacons of the church on 3 pages. No further autographs or writing in the book. Autograph book good loss of half the spine leather the book quite rubbed. The small Bibles etc. are Very Good to Near Fine. A unique collection of post Civil War Memphiana. . Leather. Very Good. Bound into Coverbind protective cover at binding edge. 1878 Soft Cover. 33 pp. Blue printed wrappers. A pro-Mormon review of the ruling from the first freedom of religion case to come before the United States Supreme Court focusing on the Mormon practices of bigamy and polygamy. George Reynolds the plaintiff was secretary to the First Presidency of the LDS Church under Brigham Young. This court case was a response to prosecution attempts under the Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act of 1862. Mormons planned to prove that the act was unconstitutional but needed a 'test defendant' to bring the matter before the courts; this led to Reynolds being indicted and found guilty in two trials held in lower courts. Ultimately the appeal to the Supreme Court was unsuccessful and the prison sentence assessed for Reynolds's original conviction held. He was released from prison in 1881 and continued his involvement with the Mormons publishing a number of related books. Henry Reed the 'old lawyer' who wrote this review concludes that the Supreme Court's ruling was unjust stating that "it was in fact Mormonism and its domestic relations that were on trial; and when the Act of 1862 was passed the judgments against them was foreordained. The court has done its work. but they have not done justice. They have won a round of applause of a number of fanatical men and silly women whose fanaticism and silliness so far as lies in their power they have made the law of the land." One of hundreds if not thousands of nicely-produced but inexpensive books and booklets issued by populist publisher John Berry Alden whose "Publishing Revolution" of the 1880s developed the potential for high-volume low-priced books for the masses paving the way for such successors as Haldeman-Julius and Henry Altemus. Such publishers favored works that were out of copyright and by issuing titles under the guise of serial publications such as Alden's "Elzevir Library" here allowed mass-market publishers to take advantage of highly favorable postal rates for periodicals. Though issued in the hundreds of thousands Alden's publications were never intended for a bibliophile audience and tended not to survive - OCLC notes only a single location for this title for example PENN. A work of political protest relating to an act passed May 11th 1874 regulating the practice of medicine and surgery in New York State. The author complains that the requirements set forth by the new legislation violate the religious beliefs of many of the state's citizens and discusses numerous alternative medical treatments made illegal by the statute. Hoolihan 1597: "With a fortune amassed from textile manufacturing Hazard retired in his mid-forties to devote himself to various reform issues including economic reform education the treatment of the insane abolition etc. Following the death of his wife and daughters Hazard became increasingly interested in spiritualism. In this work Hazard takes issue with legislation passed in the State of New York 1874 requiring practitioners who were not medical school graduates to obtain certification from the State county or district medical society. Hazard writes: "I see. that the M.D.s of New York have commenced broadening their opportunity for mischief in their death-dealing profession by taking the initiatory step to stop by fine and imprisonment a mediumistic doctress Mrs. Holmes from healing the sick after the fashion and order prescribed practiced and commanded by Jesus Christ of imparting health and vitality through 'the laying on of hands'" p. 4. Throughout his treatise Hazard contrasts 'the criminal practices of the faculty' and the collusion of the legal and clerical professions with the successes of clairvoyant and spiritualistic healers. Biography of Thomas Wolsey born c. 1475 made cardinal 1515 Henry VIII's lord chancellor and from 1515-1529 Wolsey's rule in foreign affairs was near-complete. Unable to arrange an annulment for Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon and unpopular with those around Anne Boleyn Henry's proposed new bride Wolsey was arrested near York in November 1530 and accused of treason. He died on 29 November of the same year as he was traveling to face trial. Morgan from her Sister Lauretta. Dec. 25th 1857. Given under peculiar circumstances to her friend Jennie W. Baird. Sunday April 11 1858". Laid in is a period gift envelope with one sheeted folded to make a 4 page note addressed to Miss Jennie Baird - Present dated Wednesday May 14th and signed Sincerely L. L. Watson. The letter explains the "peculiar circumstances" of the gift - Aunt Let Lauretta is on her deathbed and is gifting this lovely book and a bar of soap to her friend Jennie whose gifts of flower bouquets have cheered her in her demise - "God's flowers Dear dear Jennie; oh that the graces of the spirit may bloom in her heart." The final 2 end pages bear small pin holes from where the letter was pinned in at one time.
