The first tract 68 pages uniformly browned the rest of the tracts free of browning or toning. Bound in 19th century marbled boards rubbed. Re-backed in black morocco with older gilt lettered spine laid on. Bookplate depicting a baron's crown on inside front cover. Sticker removed from front end paper. Booklet is trimmed on the bottom obscuring the lower printed border line on the title page but not affecting any text. Plenty of space remains in the margins of the text pages. 40 sheets of 19th century blank paper are bound in the rear. Top edge gilt. The author is actually Henry Keepe writing under the pseudonym of Charles Taylour. His booklet addressed to King James II describes how he Keepe salvaged the crucifix and gold chain of Edward the Confessor from a damaged tomb at Westminster and how he later presented this treasure to the newly crowned king. The author claims that his discovery of the artifact on June 11 1685 was a "forerunner of the Good News" that James had defeated his enemies presumably the Duke of Monmouth. Keepe then relates three previous occasions when King Edward's body was disinterred. On each occasion the corpse was supposedly found in a miraculously uncorrupted state. These stories stand in some contrast to the author's own experience. Although Keepe stresses that the tomb's artifacts including the gold chain and crucifix correspond to historical accounts he also reveals perhaps inadvertently that the Confessor's body was nothing but bones. Unusual and scarce piece. ESTC locates only 7 copies in the U.S. OCLC lists 5 locations. 1613033211<p>London: Printed by John Pindley for Samuel Macham 1613 A fair copy of the extremely scarce 1st edition in newer half leather binding. Classed as 'fair' because 2 leaves are in facsimile and a further leaf has lost its side margin which may have had reference notes. Bishop Joseph Hall 1574-1656 held high positions in the English Church and was known for his scholarship and skills in debate. He became a Doctor of Divinity in 1612 and turned increasingly from writing to preaching. Henry Prince of Wales made Hall his Chaplain in 1608 and he was invited by James I to preach a sermon on the 19th anniversary of his accession. Contents: title blank verso; dedication 4pp; text 109pp; Finis. The title page has an elaborate archway design and there are decorative headpieces and initial capitals. The binding is in near fine clean condition with title label to spine and marbled boards. The endpapers are contemporary with the binding. Text paper is lightly toned but generally clean. Page edges are a little fragile and some corner tips are turned over. There are a few small ink annotations - one on the title page one scholarly - the rest not. 1642032836Oxford: Printed by Leonard Lichfield 1642 An extremely scarce 1st edition copy of Francis Potter's work. Potter 1594-1678 was a clergyman with a wide range of other interests. He was an early member of the Royal Society admitted in 1663 experimenting with bees theorising about blood transfusion and making instruments including a sundial. He developed a theory that the approximate square root of 666 - 25 - had a strong connection with catholic institutions. His first attempt to set this out in 1637 was described as a 'wonderful discovery' by Joseph Mede whose 'judgement' is included in the work. This copy has been rebacked relaying as much as possible of the spine which has raised bands red title label and the date at the base. The corners have been rebuilt. The boards are marbled with a stain on the rear board. Edges are scuffed. Internally there is the armorial bookplate of William Legge to the front pastedown endpaper. The endpaper joints have been repaired. Page edges are red. Contents: initial blank; copper-engraved title page by W Marshall - with old signature to top; Joseph Mede's judgement with old scholarly note to margin 1p; To the reader 8pp; Chapter list and corrigenda 6pp; text with diagrams pp 1-214; finis; final blank. Text with decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals. The contents are very clean. At some point one or more adventurous worms explored the top corners of most pages from To the Reader to p 197. They were clearly discerning readers because they missed the text. Expert professional paper repair by bookbinder Elizabeth Howard has stabilised the paper and although there is discolouration which also affects the verso of the title the impact is minimised. The numbers at the top of pp 105/6 and 109-114 are affected. Another small worm exploration affects pp 167-187 again without impact on the text but the diagram at p 175 has a small hole in it. With the nineteenth century bookplate of Charles Noel Welman on front paste-down. With a lengthy and neatly calligraphed provenance 1860 by Welman on two preliminaries eighteenth century MS signature on title verso and earlier MS notes on rear free endpaper. A crisp copy of what is arguably Hanmer's best-known work though authorship has been attributed sometime to others. Jonathan Hanmer 1606-1687 ejected minister and lecturer at Barnstaple from 1646 to 1662 was father to John Hanmer an ancestor of the Welman family as outlined in the inscription. RARE. Complete in all respects and in excellent condition throughout with clean pages clear print and ample margins. Engraved title is a rich deep impression. A treatise on the Number of the Beast by the English clergyman scientific instrument maker early member of the Royal Society and friend of John Aubrey. According to the ODNB Potter was interested in "connecting 25 the ‘appropinque’ square root of 666 with various institutions in the Roman Catholic church. His ideas were elaborated in a manuscript which was read in 1637 by Joseph Mede and commended as a wonderful discovery the ‘happiest that ever yet came into the world.'" Pepys considered it "mighty ingenious." It continued to be influential and was reprinted as late as 1808. Aubrey’s short life of Potter paints a vivid picture of his character and highly inventive mind. N. B.
