Rubens Esq. - "Dear Sir We have lately found a copy of a pamphlet which we believe may interest you." and signed in ink by E. P. Goldschmidt. Alfred Rubens 1903-1998 was an English collector and historian and chairman of the London Jewish Museum for many years. Ernst Philip Goldschmidt 1887-1954 was a legendary bookseller scholar and bibliophile. And although no indication internally this copy most recently from the collection of Joel Silver Director of the Lilly Library. A marvelous rare book world copy indeed ! The baptism and conversion to Christianity of Eve Cohan caused a huge uproar in late 17th century London. She converted to be married to Michael Verboon and her parents tried to have him arrested. Soil to front pastedown; light stain to top one third of title page otherwise very clean text. Pierre de Marca January 24 1594 June 29 1662 was a French bishop and historian born at Gan in Béarn of a family distinguished in the magistracy. Among his numerous publications the most important are: "Histoire de Béarn" folio Paris 1640; "De concordia sacerdotii et imperii seu de libertatibus ecclesiae gallicanae" folio Paris 1641 and other editions; "Marca hispanica seu limes hispanicus" published by Baluze D. Balusii above folio Paris 1688. Some "Lettres inedites de Marca" have been published by Tartizey de Lorroque Paris 1881 and J. Bonnet in the "Revuede Gascogne" January-June 1910. As his secretary Baluze and de Marca's cousin and biographer Paul de Faget seem to have worked to promote and publish his work after his death this would appear to be an early anthology of some of his writings not found recorded in this edition on WorldCat or in any other sources that I can locate at this time though my reach for this material is admittedly short. From our own research Fray Tome de Jesus/Thome de Jesus/Thomas of Jesus was a reformer and preacher born in Lisbon 1529 and died in prison at Sagena Morocco in April 1582. He was educated by the Augustinian Hermits from age ten entered the order in Lisbon in 1534 completed his studies at Coimbra and was appointed novice-master. The eventual establishment of the Discalced or Reformed Augustinians is attributed to his innovations which became associated with the Crown and the Papal office. There are 2 volumes to this study but we only have this one. The book was eventually translated into Spanish English French and Italian to name but a few. From what we know the earliest printing appeared sometime around 1601-1609--Biblioteca Nacional de Espana has a copy dating from 1619 and 1622; Princeton University has the 1673 edition. Our copy is bound in calfskin/vellum; the spinetail and corner edges are bumped and well-worn; numerous cracks and creases from age; the boards are rubbed and worn; some foxing and discoloration of the covers; binding completely broken at 'Imprimatur' page; previous owner's annotations are inscribed on the last free page in Spanish. <br/> <br/> Jacinto Andreu hardcover

With four engraved plates small octavo t.p. 201326 133-406 2-page publisher's catalogue browning and age-toning with occasional blotching a corner torn from the first blank a worm-hole in the margin of the early pages but only really noticeable on the first eleven pages tight internally original calf rubbed and pocked neatly re-backed with new unlettered leather spine the original endpapers retained. In Rays time understanding of creation was governed by the account in the Bible. It was thought that the earth dated from about 5000BC and that fossils were formed in nature as imitations of shells fish or other creatures but were not a genuine creature. Rays observations of the changing coastlines around Britain and his fossil excavations led him to question both of these. He published his work on Fossils in his Miscellaneous Discourses 1692. The work quickly sold out and a considerably enlarged second edition with a new title was published the next year which is the copy we offer here . In particular he put forward that fossils were the remains of creatures that were now extinct going against the commonly held view that all creatures that God created at the beginning still existed. Rare 1st edition in vellum binding which is not original but very old; the binder used a leaf which has a portion of a royal seal on the rear free endpaper with the date 1726; also on the obverse of that leaf is written "Huno emi libry pothuidie Kalendar gbxu 1728 - JR Vn." which I believe is the binder's signature; I may very well not have all the letters right. The spine is inscribed "Teatro de Los Dioses". Vellum is in good condition; an old rip in the rear cover has been sewn shut. Otherwise it is rippled a little soiled and darkened on the spine. The endpapers likewise are rippled and creased and written on by several different people. The text is likewise good; begins with the engraved title page which has been reinforced on the foreedge and has an old owner's name at the bottom. The first introductory page also has owner's writing. There is no loss of text anywhere but there are water stains here and there the worst being a brown stain at the upper right from p. 897 to the end. The final page of the 'Tabla' table of contents appearing after the text has short tears in the foreedge. All text is Spanish. Note: the second volume of this work was published in 1623 and a third by a different author in 1688. <br/> <br/> Antonia Ramirez hardcover

They were originally published as The Rules and Exercises of Holy Living in 1650 and The Rules and Exercises of Holy Dying in 1651. Holy Living is designed to instruct the reader in living a virtuous life increasing personal piety and avoiding temptations. Holy Dying is meant to instruct the reader in the "means and instruments" of preparing for a blessed death. Holy Dying was the "artistic climax" of a consolatory death literature tradition that had begun with Ars moriendi in the 15th century. Sir Jonathan Trelawny Bishop of Bristol William Lloyd Bishop of St. Asaph William Sancroft Bishop of Canterbury was three of the Bishops on trial for seditious libel under King James II. From wikipedia: <br /> <br /> Sir Jonathan Trelawny 3rd Baronet 24 March 1650 – 19 July 1721 was a British Bishop of Bristol Bishop of Exeter and Bishop of Winchester. Trelawny is best known for his role in the events leading up to the Glorious Revolution which are sometimes believed to be referenced in the Cornish anthem The Song of the Western Men. He was born at Trelawne in the parish of Pelynt Cornwall the eldest surviving son of Sir Jonathan Trelawny 2nd Baronet. He was educated at Westminster School and then went to Christ Church Oxford at the start of the Michaelmas term of 1668 where he distinguished himself as a scholar.<br /> A staunch royalist he was ordained in 1673 and became a beneficed clergyman. He was appointed rector of South Hill on 4 October and of St. Ives on 12 December 1677 becoming Bishop of Bristol in 1685. He was one of the Seven Bishops tried for seditious libel under James II. Trelawny and the other bishops petitioned against James II's Declaration of Indulgence in 1687 and 1688 granting religious tolerance to Catholics and as a result he was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London on charges of seditious libel. The bishops said that whilst they were loyal to King James II their consciences would not agree to allowing freedom of worship to Catholics even if it were to be within the privacy of their own homes as the Declaration proposed; thus they could not sign. Trelawny was held for three weeks before trial then tried and acquitted; this led to great celebrations with bells being rung in his home parish of Pelynt.1<br /> <br /> William Lloyd was born at Tilehurst in Berkshire in 1627 the son of Richard Lloyd then vicar1 who was the son of David Lloyd of Henblas Anglesey. By the age of eleven he had understanding in Greek and Latin and somewhat of Hebrew before attending Oriel and Jesus Colleges Oxford later becoming a Fellow of Jesus College.2 He graduated M.A. in 1646. In 1663 he was prebendary of Ripon in 1667 prebendary of Salisbury in 1668 archdeacon of Merioneth in 1672 dean of Bangor and prebendary of St Paul's London in 1680 bishop of St Asaph in 1689 lord-almoner in 1692 bishop of Lichfield and Coventry and in 1699 bishop of Worcester.3 As Bishop of Lichfield he rebuilt the diocesan residence at Eccleshall Castle which had been destroyed in the Civil War.4<br /> Lloyd was an indefatigable opponent of the Roman Catholic tendencies of James II of England and was one of the seven bishops who for refusing to have the Declaration of Indulgence read in his diocese was charged with publishing a seditious libel against the king.3 However he was acquitted in 1688 which was one of the events that lead to the fall of James II.citation needed<br /> He engaged Gilbert Burnet to write The History of the Reformation of the Church of England and provided him with much material. Lloyd was a staunch supporter of the Glorious Revolution.3<br /> He lived to the age of ninety-one and died at Hartlebury Castle on 30 August 1717. He was buried in the church of Fladbury near Evesham in Worcestershire of which his son was rector and where a monument is erected to his memory with a long inscription.5<br /> <br /> William Sancroft 30 January 1617 – 24 November 1693 was the 79th Archbishop of Canterbury2 and was one of the Seven Bishops imprisoned in 1688 for seditious libel against King James II over his opposition to the king's Declaration of Indulgence. Deprived of his office in 1690 for refusing to swear allegiance to William and Mary he later enabled and supported the consecration of new nonjuring bishops leading to the nonjuring schism. Lancelot Addison 1632-1703 was a Church of England clergyman and writer. He spent time as a Chaplain in Tangiers in the 1660's and states in the dedication that this provided the opportunity to study the Jewish population there. The binding is in fine clean condition with title label and gilt banding to spine. Internally new endpapers and blanks have been added.
