Raised bands gilt decorations and title on the spine. Two title pages but continuos pagination. Inscription by the previous owner on the front blank end sheet. Front blank end sheet has some holes upper corner partly affecting the inscription. Moderate toning to the contents. Small worm hole lower back foredge not affecting the text. Pages 407-428 also has a small worm hole top edge not affecting the text. Chapter in part 2 pages 279-311 is titled "Considerations On the Keeping of Negroes."<br /> <br /> This first edition was published after the death of Woolman 1720-1772. Several later editions have been published. John Woolman was a Quaker minister and early abolitionist. Containing I The Life of Josephus as Written by Himself. II The Antiquity of the Jewish People; with a Defense of those Antiquities in answer to Apion. III The History of the Martyrdom of the Maccabees; and the Wars of the Jews with the Neighbouring Nations till the Final Destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman Power. IV Account of Philo's Ambassy from the Jews of Alexandria to the Emperor Caius Caligula." Leather is marked and rubbed and split over all joints - covers are only held by cords and joints are fragile. Corners are bumped and well-scuffed. Title pages and frontis's are a little ragged smudge marked and vol II frontis is tipped onto inside of front cover. Both front end-papers are missing both rear end-papers are creased. Internal binding is sound printer/publisher binding error with page 107/108 in Volume I printed back to front. Light foxing to pages facing plates but pages are otherwise clean and bright. There is minor worm damage on the lower margins of some pages in Volume II. Sixty-seven of the seventy plates described in the "Directions for Placing the Plates" are present but not all in the described place one being in the wrong volume. Two plates are fold out - the Temple of Solomon plate has significant creasing. Plates include a number of maps including one fold-out map ." The missing plate are Jacob Herod and Pilate. With the 'Moses' frontispiece and 'Cherubim' title and complete with final advertisement leaf often missing. 'Eyres' in imprint should read 'Eyre'. Title of 'Private Devotions' dated 1764 but with continuous pagination. Crisp copy of one of the leading Anglican devotional works of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The author by popular consensus was a tutor to Milton and author of several other devotional works. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. ESTC T26177 recording the first edition of 1658.
