Very good contemporary binding of panelled calf speckled with four raised bands to the spines gilt ownership stamp of I. Phelipps Y to the front panel. Red title label to the spine with a little loss. Binding very good and strong short cracks to head of front and rear joints and leather slightly chipped to bottom of spine. Contents clean and tight some pages a little toned good margins. A very good copy. Provenance: from Newton Surmaville in Somerset. This house was originally bought by Robert Harbin a mercer of Blandford in 1608 from Joseph Compton. Robert Harbin rebuilt the house completed in 1612. The house had remained in the family until 2007 when the last member of the family Sophia Wyndham died aged 97. The contents of the house were also sold in 2007 including the library which had remained untouched for hundreds of years. Many of the volumes of classics theology and history belonged to the Rev. John Phelipps second son of Edward Phelipps of Montacute. Vicar of Yeovil. 1756-66 and bear his gilt bookstamp as is the case with this book. Printed for Corn, Crownfield Hardcover

The Book of Common Prayer has numerous plates. Both are bound together in contemporary English full red calf with elaborate gilt decorations and a black medallion with the initials JHS on the front. Condition is GOOD ; the front joint is broken and the cover only attached by the first pg of text which has a tear due to the condition. Otherwise the covers are clean with mild shelf wear and a lovely aged patina. The text of both books is bright and clean. Contemporary binding of full red morocco with black medallion on both covers and gilt decorations. Gilt inner dentelle marbled endpapers. The two books are bound as one. Condition is VERY GOOD ; the leather is quite supple front hinge has a liitle separation at top at bottom but the binding is very solid. Front cover has two small ink spots. Mild wear to edges. Text is clear with some usual mild toning and a sprinkling of foxing. On the blank pg following the text there is an Easter hymn written in a contemporary hand in sepia ink. The Psalms has a title pg Cambridge John Archdeacon 1783. Condition is GOOD ; book lacks the rear board. Front hinge shows a fine crack but the binding is tight. Title pg of Common Prayer lacking first pg of the text is the contents pg. The ffep is charming: written in a contemporary hand is: Sarah Salt Hur Book. Steale not this book for feer of shame for here you see the owners name." On the back of this page are two ink drawings of "Queen Ann and King George 3". Rear end-paper is detached very darkened and has a previous owner's name. Title page and frontis are darkened but clear all pages are otherwise a little darkened but with clear text. Woodcut illustrated initials throughout; engraved headpiece at the beginning of each volume / section. Bound in full calf with spines gilt in five compartments; rubbing and wear labels chipped; head and tail caps are carefully restored including some gilt lines which are renewed; corner tips of boards are repaired. Marbled fly-leaves are lacking in the first volume. Notes are written in an early hand on front blank leaf of volume I. Title page is printed in red and black. Interior is generally clean with occasional mild foxing soiling and wear; one word of marginalia is written in an old hand on p.43 of volume I. Veit Ludwig von Seckendorf 1626-1692 German historian and jurist. His most important work "Commentarius historicus et apologeticus de Lutheranismo sive de Reformatione" first published at Leipzig 1692 in 3 vols is an extensive history of the Reformation and the Thirty Years War which is still valuable to historians today. Seckendorf both utilized and quoted from many primary source manuscripts and printed materials found in the libraries of the Saxon princes. His work was in part an answer to the Jesuit Louis Maimbourgs "Histoire du Lutheranisme" published Paris 1680. The first German translation of Seckendorfs history revised - shortening the lengthy quotations from Maimbourg was printed in 1714. A second German edition here listed edited with additions by Benjamin Lindern appeared in 1755. According to the scholar L.W. Spitz Lindnern dropped Seckendorfs complex arrangement which followed Maimbourg and reduced the work "to a more continuous narrative." See L.W.
