This work was originally issued as a weekly periodical in 43 numbers February 4 to November 25 1717 and then as this collected edition in 1717. Badger 1834-36. & Charles Jacobs of Gilmanton. <br/><br/>Isaiah Thomas whom Benjamin Franklin called 'the Baskerville of America' was one of the notable publishers during the early days of the Republic.He made every effort to ensure accuracy of the text by comparing some thirty different editions and having the text carefully examined by several clergymen and others who compared it with eight Bibles - Herbert 1353." The First Illustrated Bible printed in America is the 1791 folio Bible by Isaiah Thomas "The most sumptuous American Bible of the eighteenth century" : thus this quarto-sized version of that work is the Second Illustrated Bible printed in America and the first Royal Quarto Bible in English published in American both editions were announced as "completed" on the same date altho vol. 2 of the folio was still in progress. Rumball-Petre 172; Sabin 5173 variant; O'Callaghan pp. 40-42; Hills 30. Evans 23185 states that some copies were issued with no Concordance and 48 additional plates. This state however has only two copperplates as frontispieces of the 50 copperplate engravings from the folio edition plates 29 & 48 . Included are 200 pages of Tables Apocrypha and Family Records Index etc. The subscription price was $7 but half the price could be paid in wheat rye Indian corn butter or pork! It is believed that 1500 copies of each format were printed. "The two Thomas Bibles of 1791 were without doubt far in advance of any other publications of the same kind that had appeared in America in point of typography excellence of paper binding and general execution - Wright EARLY BIBLES OF AMERICA." Front end-papers are very darkened and prelims other than title and frontis are missing. Introductory pages i-vx are missing and pages 501-finis are missing. Rear end-paper is detached very darkened and has a previous owner's name. Title page and frontis are darkened but clear all pages are otherwise a little darkened but with clear text. Handwritten note to ffep in near contemporary hand noting "Rev'd Marshall D. Smith Passaic New Jersey. Very rare and therefore to be carefully used and returned to the owner." Small thumbnail sized chip at bottom outer margin of title page with no loss of text. Some light soiling to first half of the text but pages otherwise clean and free from marking soiling or staining. Top edge brightly gilt. Other edges uncut. Bound in early 20th Century polished calf by Pratt with gilt panels of triple gilt-ruled borders and gilt acorn decorations in corners. Original spine with six gilt decorated compartments and two black morocco spine labels relaid. Extremities lightly rubbed. Griffiths 1789/8. A spectacular and uncut copy of the rarest Anglican/Episcopal Prayer Book. The Protestant Episcopal Church was founded at a convention at Philadelphia in 1785. After the American Revolution a new American Prayer Book was proposed and printed in an edition of 4000 copies by a Philadelphia printer. This edition was printed in a very limited number for the use of the bishops in England. Only fifty 50 copies were printed. "A rarer book connected with American church history can hardly be named." Contemporary binding of full red morocco with black medallion on both covers and gilt decorations. Gilt inner dentelle marbled endpapers. The two books are bound as one. Condition is VERY GOOD ; the leather is quite supple front hinge has a liitle separation at top at bottom but the binding is very solid. Front cover has two small ink spots. Mild wear to edges. Text is clear with some usual mild toning and a sprinkling of foxing. On the blank pg following the text there is an Easter hymn written in a contemporary hand in sepia ink. The Psalms has a title pg Cambridge John Archdeacon 1783. Condition is GOOD ; book lacks the rear board. Front hinge shows a fine crack but the binding is tight. Title pg of Common Prayer lacking first pg of the text is the contents pg. The ffep is charming: written in a contemporary hand is: Sarah Salt Hur Book. Steale not this book for feer of shame for here you see the owners name." On the back of this page are two ink drawings of "Queen Ann and King George 3". The Book of Common Prayer has numerous plates. Both are bound together in contemporary English full red calf with elaborate gilt decorations and a black medallion with the initials JHS on the front. Condition is GOOD ; the front joint is broken and the cover only attached by the first pg of text which has a tear due to the condition. Otherwise the covers are clean with mild shelf wear and a lovely aged patina. The text of both books is bright and clean. Binding very good and strong short crack to head of the rear joint corners worn. Contents clean and tight signed Phelipps Yovill 1763 to the front pastedown no rear free endpaper no foxing. A very good copy. Provenance: from Newton Surmaville in Somerset. This house was originally bought by Robert Harbin a mercer of Blandford in 1608 from Joseph Compton. Robert Harbin rebuilt the house completed in 1612. The house had remained in the family until 2007 when the last member of the family Sophia Wyndham died aged 97. The contents of the house were also sold in 2007 including the library which had remained untouched for hundreds of years. Many of the volumes of classics theology and history belonged to the Rev. John Phelipps second son of Edward Phelipps of Montacute. Vicar of Yeovil. 1756-66 and bear his gilt bookstamp as is the case with this book. Printed for Daniel Browne By J. 1764AQ21402London: s.n. 1764. 14pp. Disbound. Title page very nearly detached. An apparently unrecorded anonymous polemic against the interpretation of the gospels by early modern theologians. The author takes exception to the affirmations of the likes of William Twisse and John Goodwin whom he charges with neglecting the precise wording of the scriptures in favour of personal ideology particularly in regard to 'Papist' beliefs in the purification of baptism. No concrete indications as to the identity of the 'J. M.' to whose writings the pamphlet responds are provided in the text; however a devotional tract issued under those initials was published at Edinburgh in 1759 entitled Bellarmine's ghost conjured by the evidence of truth; or John Goodwin laid in his grave after his resurrection. A dialogue upon the active obedience of Christ between a pretended seceder and a member of the Church of Scotland ESTC T204142.
