The second edition with a printing of only 3000 copies. The title translates as: "The inquiry questions illustrating the meaning of the Holy Scriptures. A good thing for Sunday Schools. Book I. About the story of Jesus and his miracles." <br> <br> This copy is from the library of James F. Hunnewell 1832-1910 with his bookplate. Hunnewell was a Boston book collector and bibliographer. He published BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS in 1869. His father James Hunnewell became familiar with the islands when the ship he was on was sold to Hawaiian chiefs. The senior Hunnewell was responsible for collecting the payment in sandalwood and then selling it in China. As a result he spent several months in the islands and became friendly with the local populace. In 1820 he arrived in Honolulu as second mate on the brig Thaddeus the ship bearing the first American missionaries as well as the first printing press there. He later developed a significant business in Hawaii which grew into the commercial house later known as C. Brewer & Company. Although he returned to Charlestown Massachusetts he spent the rest of his life actively engaged in exporting goods to Hawaii and California. With faults a very good copy. This copy with the signature of "John Rittenhouse 1849" on front pastedown. Rare and attractive Schippach imprint written for the religious education of the children of the Mennonite Community in what is now known as Skippack Pennsylvania. Lessons include teachings about the creation of the world the fall of man Old Testament stories the Gospels and commandments. The final chapter is on the organization of the Mennonite Community. The origin of the name "Skippack" comes from early German settlers who moved west from Philadelphia and settled in Montgomery County. A catechism entirely in the Chippewa dialect of the Algonquin language. The format is in a question-and-answer style. "Father Gafron writes me that he was prevented by circumstances from reading the proof of this work and that it contains many typographic errors" - Pilling. An errata list would be published in 1884. Contemporary mottled calf metal clasps; binding rubbed at spine. Joints cracked yet sound; text block foxed throughout; with faults a good copy. Scarce Lancaster edition printed in German the text from the edition published in the Netherlands in 1575. Simons was an ordained Catholic priest from Friesland in the Low Countries who followed the progress of the Reformation and recognized the need for reform and adherence to the teachings of the Bible. Transubstantiation and infant baptism were two doctrinal issues that he particularly found wanting. Through his exhaustive study of scripture he came to understand that they were not in the Bible and therefore he could no longer perform the sacrament as prescribed by Catholic liturgy. Ein Fundament und Klare Anweisung is a record of his biblical studies which had a significant influence on Dutch reform movements and the growth of the Anabaptist sect.
