It states that due to the "advanced stage" of the legislative session there is not ample time to investigate the claims of money owed and destroyed property and for the time the "agents for said claimants have leave to withdraw their accounts at pleasure." The briefness of this item as well as its matter-of-fact style masks the horrors of the events that it eludes to: the Martyrdom and the forced exile of the Mormons from Nauvoo. Flake/Draper 4189. Shows some very light rubbing of the boards scattered foxing and oil marks throughout but unobstructive of the text light cursive former owner names of the period written on the title page which are also unobstructive of text or design somewhat dust marked fore-edges otherwise the binding is strong and tight the text is unmarked and the boards remain bright and distinctive. Published in 1890. 71 xxvi pp. This is a former library book with stamps bookplates and a call number sticker. The covers show heavy edge wear particularly at the corners where the boards are visible underneath of the cloth. The spine was painted by the library and the title was written along the spine in contrasting white. Text block edges are stamped. A bookplate obscures an interesting inscription on the front pastedown. Hinges are cracked but have been temporarily repaired with archival glue. Interior is tanned but clean and unmarked. Edward Shippen IV 1729-1806 was lawyer judge government official and prominent figure in colonial and post-revolutionary Philadelphia. In 1791 he was appointed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court serving with Jasper Yeates and Edward Burd both kinsmen and former students. Shippen became chief justice in 1799 but in 1804 was impeached on flimsey political grounds. The next year the Pennsylvania Senate acquitted him and his associates. 8vo 491 86 pp. The text is followed by a 96-page appendix which cites numerous legal points in previous cases as they relate to this one.
