Overall very good condition. A very rare volume still colorful and beautiful.The New England state of Connecticut played a relatively small but important role in the American Civil War providing arms equipment money supplies and manpower for the Union Army as well as the Union Navy. Several Connecticut politicians played significant roles in the Federal government and helped shape its policies during the war and the subsequent Reconstruction. Damp stained on bottom of front and rear board slightly bleeding through to first and last several pages but no significant damage. Top raised edge of calf from spine above gilt and board top edge-line is gone wear to bottom edge with a small 1/8 inch square piece missing. Hinges and all signatures are tight. Some corner wear and bumping though retaining square. Previous Owner name inside front cover in red ink stamp black ink stamp "271" on foot edge of pages. No other marks. Photos upon request. Some toning evident in margins and whatever pattern was originally given the page block edges has worn to an uneven brown; the front endpaper has split along the hinge and there is some residue of a bookplate on the pastedown; the binding remains secure though with a short tear in the legal-yellow cloth along the left front two shallow depressions at the front foreedge wear to the cloth at free and bound corners and noticeable handling prints; decoration at the spine including the red and black leather labels for title and year shows concurrent wear including chipping of leather and flaking of the gilt borders on the leather; nonetheless designed to be sturdy and to maintain its dignity on the shelf in which endeavor it continues to succeed. 932pp A well-kept reprint of the climactic volume in the golden age "Colony of New York" series that preceded the popular multiverse crossover "Constitutional Convention" starring John A.
