"16" in ink at upper right-hand corner of title page. This report of the committee of the Pennsylvania Senate declared that bridges erected from Zane's Island to both Virginia and Ohio obstructed the navigation of the Ohio River impacting the movement of steamboats and other boats to and from the port of Pittsburg. This was part of a case that concluded before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1855 as Pennsylvania v. Wheeling & Belmont Bridge Co. 59 U.S. 18 How. 421 commonly known as the Wheeling Bridge Case. 189012552Annapolis MD: Maryland Republican Steam Press 1890. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair/No Dust Jacket. 8.75 x 5.90 x 0.30 inches. Extremely rare title. Published in 1890. 71 xxvi pp. This is a former library book with stamps bookplates and a call number sticker. The covers show heavy edge wear particularly at the corners where the boards are visible underneath of the cloth. The spine was painted by the library and the title was written along the spine in contrasting white. Text block edges are stamped. A bookplate obscures an interesting inscription on the front pastedown. Hinges are cracked but have been temporarily repaired with archival glue. Interior is tanned but clean and unmarked. Lettering on spine reads "Journals House of Assembly Lower Canada 1832-33 Appendix." New endpapers. Front free endpaper has light dampstain to bottom corner. English and French title pages have professional repair to bottom near margin. Some thumbing to pages. Certain sections have wrinkling and staining; approx. the last 60 leaves are more stained. Last 4 leaves have stuck together and last leaf has holes. Very last page of text is illegible in places due to sticking. <br /><br />"From the 15th November 1832 to the 3d April 1833. In the Third year of the Reign of King William the Fourth. Being the Third Session of the Fourteenth Provincial Parliament of This Province." Includes reference to the May 21 election riots in Montreal. On that occasion three supporters of Daniel Tracey of the Parti Patriote were shot dead by government troops. Colonel MacIntosh and Captain Temple are arrested for ordering the shooting. The next day it was announced that Tracey had been elected to the Legislative Assembly for Montreal West. Appendix M approx. 140 p. of this volume pertains to correspondence concerning these events in both English and French. First published in 1857. The author of this report and a minority of one was James Johnston Pettigrew 1828-1863. The question being considered was apparently whether South Carolina should revive the slave trade. Pettigrew argued against its revival although he was not against slavery. Pettigrew later served with distinction in the Confederate army rising to the rank of Brigadier General. He was killed in 1863 during the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg. Front cover and to some extent the back was exposed to severe dust-soil. We used an artist's erasure-shavings pad to remove the worst smuts. Paperstock very toned but not badly fragile. The initial vote count for the 1894 election indicated that Evans the Republican candidate had won but the Democractic-controlled legislature declared that voter fraud had occured and negated over 23000 votes allowing Turney to win. In the 1880s Johannesburg was the largest city in the Transvaal and the principal center of Jewish life in South Africa. On Jan. 29 1888 the Witwatersrand Gold-Fields' Jewish association bought two building-plots on President street for a synagogue and at the same time changed its name to "Witwatersrand Hebrew Congregation." The Rev. Mark L. Harris of Kimberley who preached at the laying of the foundation-stone Nov. 9 1888 was elected rabbi retaining that post till March 31 1898. He was succeeded by the Rev. W. Wolf reader and Dr. Joseph Herman Hertz rabbi. Illustrated with numerous b/w photographic reproductions this booklet was published to commemorate the 10 year-anniversary of the Witwatersrand Old Hebrew Congregation. Minor and sporadic creasing along edges of wrappers. Faint creasing mark at center of pages. Wrappers in overall good interior in good to very good condition. Printed by M. J. Shows some very light rubbing of the boards scattered foxing and oil marks throughout but unobstructive of the text light cursive former owner names of the period written on the title page which are also unobstructive of text or design somewhat dust marked fore-edges otherwise the binding is strong and tight the text is unmarked and the boards remain bright and distinctive. A fascinating book that details the laws of Connecticut as of 1821 with the Declaration of Independence and The US and Connecticut Constitutions. At the time there were 13 amendments to the US Constitution. Bound in worn leather there are sections of leather worn off on front spine and rear corners worn round spine crumbling with unreadable text labels. Only one endpaper remains it has a hole and pen name "Ira Bushnell." Foxing and toning on the interior paper edges have damage no rear endpapers.
