This report of the committee of the Pennsylvania Senate declared that bridges erected from Zane's Island to both Virginia and Ohio obstructed the navigation of the Ohio River impacting the movement of steamboats and other boats to and from the port of Pittsburg. This was part of a case that concluded before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1855 as Pennsylvania v. Wheeling & Belmont Bridge Co. 59 U.S. 18 How. 421 commonly known as the Wheeling Bridge Case. Old paper and glue remnants along left side of front cover some lettering slightly obscured. Blank bottom corner of one leaf torn off. Cattered minor foxing. Contents sound and clean. First published in 1857. The author of this report and a minority of one was James Johnston Pettigrew 1828-1863. The question being considered was apparently whether South Carolina should revive the slave trade. Pettigrew argued against its revival although he was not against slavery. Pettigrew later served with distinction in the Confederate army rising to the rank of Brigadier General. He was killed in 1863 during the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg. In the 1880s Johannesburg was the largest city in the Transvaal and the principal center of Jewish life in South Africa. On Jan. 29 1888 the Witwatersrand Gold-Fields' Jewish association bought two building-plots on President street for a synagogue and at the same time changed its name to "Witwatersrand Hebrew Congregation." The Rev. Mark L. Harris of Kimberley who preached at the laying of the foundation-stone Nov. 9 1888 was elected rabbi retaining that post till March 31 1898. He was succeeded by the Rev. W. Wolf reader and Dr. Joseph Herman Hertz rabbi. Illustrated with numerous b/w photographic reproductions this booklet was published to commemorate the 10 year-anniversary of the Witwatersrand Old Hebrew Congregation. Minor and sporadic creasing along edges of wrappers. Faint creasing mark at center of pages. Wrappers in overall good interior in good to very good condition. Printed by M. J. Deaccessioned as a library duplicate the only indication being a mid-20th century gift stamp deep in the inner margin of p. 3; contents clean. <br /> <br /> An address criticizing incumbent Pennsylvania governor Thomas McKean and recommending Simon Snyder as governor in the 1805 election. While Snyder lost to McKean in a contentious 1805 contest he would ultimately win in 1808 and serve three terms. The language early in the address is salient: "Principles and not men were the foundations on which American independence was established . Principles and not men have been the objects of contest ever since between the several parties which have arisen under our government; but we are now brought to a point when it is to be determined by the public suffrage whether men setting at defiance the wishes of the people and the principles of representative government shall govern Pennsylvania" p. 3.
