This is a former library hardcover book with 494 pages and includes the 3 folding maps as listed in very good condition but does NOT include the called for Atlas with 20 sheets. The binding is strong with all pages firmly attached. There are 2 University Library stamps on the first end paper No other library markings. The prior owner wrote their name date and town on the second end paper and wrote some notes on the last end paper. The title page and first few pages show very light foxing. The title page shows 1857 as the published date. The decorative red covers have gold design and gold gilt page fore edges. The covers show light soiling light edgewear and a thin slit along the back/ spine attachment. We always ship in a sturdy box! John Lovell hardcover

Charles Duncombe a prominent American-born physician and politician in Upper Canada was appointed in 1835 to visit and report upon the systems of education pursued in the United States and to offer recommendations for the educational institutions of Upper Canada. His report pp. 68 in which he stresses the need for practical education and adequate financial support for common schools and teacher education is followed by a lengthy appendix of supporting documentation pp. 69-256. Although Duncombe's proposals were not immediately implemented many would be introduced under the administration of Egerton Ryerson and would form the basis of Ontario educational policy until 1871 i.e. local assessment elective school boards female education the creation of normal schools non-sectarian religious instruction &c. Front cover and to some extent the back was exposed to severe dust-soil. We used an artist's erasure-shavings pad to remove the worst smuts. Paperstock very toned but not badly fragile. The initial vote count for the 1894 election indicated that Evans the Republican candidate had won but the Democractic-controlled legislature declared that voter fraud had occured and negated over 23000 votes allowing Turney to win.
