This 1748 engraving presents a bird's-eye view of Jerusalem based on descriptions found in the Old Testament particularly the Book of Nehemiah. It depicts the City of David fortifications and significant sites with a key on the left using letters and numbers for identification. The map was printed in London by T. Osborne A. Miller and J. Osborn.1 folding plate. Close cropped at the right hand margin. Small tear neatly repaired to the rear. This bird's-eye view of Jerusalem is derived from a creative interpretation of descriptions found in the Old Testament. With north positioned to the right the City of David is depicted in a circular layout on Mount Zion. The city's fortifications and various significant sites are illustrated accompanied by a key on the left that uses letters and numbers for identification. Size: 40 x 41 cms. Denoted the "Fourth Edition." The earliest edition under this title recorded by the ESTC is the 1790 "third" edition and the last the 1797 "fifth" edition. All seem to be uncommon in institutions: 1 copy of the third edition is reported 2 copies of this edition none in North America and 3 of the fifth edition. Another "fourth edition" appeared in Baltimore in 1792. One is somewhat hard- pressed to account for the apparent scarcity of these early editions of the New Jerusalem Church Liturgy. ESTC T123152. Mild wear at extremities; bookplate and old shelf marks at pastedown and endleaf; else an attractive copy with fine crisp text.<br /> <br /> Collation: 8 A-2E8 2F4 = 236 leaves.<br /> <br /> First Latin edition of this controversial work by Nektarios 1602/05-1676/85 the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem from 1661 to 1669 dedicated to Thomas Tenison the archbishop of Canterbury and King William III. Fabricius notes that Nektarios was born in Crete and educated at Athens under Theophilus Corydales. He was a strict partisan of Greek orthodoxy and endorsed the Confession of Mogilas in 1662. “During his patriarchate the Romish emissaries were very active in endeavoring to persuade the Greek Christians of Palestine… to unite with the Church of Rome; among them a Franciscan named Peter was especially active in distributing five tracts in defense of the papal authority. These tracts Nectarius answered by the publication of another entitled Peri tes arches tou Papa antirresis - On the Beginning of the Pope Antichrist which is a fair refutation of the five principles laid down in the Roman Catholic tracts†McClintock & Strong Cyclopedia 6:914. This refutation first appeared at Yassy in 1681 or 1682 and was later translated into the present Latin version by the eminent scholar and Huguenot refugee to England Pierre Allix 1641-1717. The conclusion of the text notes “Excusus per Metrophanem Hieromonachum Giazi Yassy in Moldavia A. MDCLXXII†-- the year of the Synod of Jerusalem which represented the climax of the Orthodox reaction against the heresies of Cyril Lucaris. Following the main text are two brief discussions of the Jesuits pp.385-406: De Jesuitis On the Jesuits; De Jesuita qui in Orientales nugas es mendacia effugiit On the Jesuits Who Spewed Falsehoods upon the Easterners. Also present is a laminated four-page ALS to John Beddoe in Manchester from his brother-in-law Charles Johnstone Dec. 16 1797 regarding Beddoes plans to improve his fortunes in America. The Sulivan sailed to Bombay Tellicherry Cochin Mangalore Tellicherry Bombay Malacca China St. Helena and home to England on East India Company business. Beddoe records weather navigational details incidents of the voyage including encounters with other shipping; a boy overboard and drowned; seamen placed in irons for abusive language mutinous insinuations and attacks; being boarded to search for deserters; storm damage and repairs; and the daily employments of the crew. A companion to this log Transactions in Port on board the Sullivan sic was donated to the Town of Jerusalem and is reported on by Jane P. Davis The Beddoe Tract: 7000 Acres in Central Western New York 2004. John Beddoe acquired 7000 along Keuka Lake on or about 1797 and remained there with his wife and children as a farmer. Rebacked expertly saving the original spine with five raised bands and compartments tooled with triple fillet borders and central gilt designs. Notes: In 1788 Anthimos 1717-1808 became Greek or Eastern Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem or simply ‘Patriarch of Jerusalem’ meaning the head bishop of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem; he held this position until his death. Along with his ecclesiastical duties Anthimos was also a scholar known particularly for his facility with languages. “Anthimos became well known as a fervent defender of Orthodoxy against Catholic proselytism which at that time was very active in Palestine. It was then that he composed first in Greek and then in Arabic his ‘Theological Treatise’ and ‘Interpretation of the Psalms.’ Having had them published in Vienna in 1791 – 92 he distributed thousands of copies of these works among the Arab Christians of the region. At the same time he enjoyed friendly relations with Sultan Selim III 1789-1807 who supported him in consolidating Orthodox rights in the Holy Land.“ Today this important Arabic book on Orthodox Christianity is very rarely seen.
