Very Good. 387; 439; 481pp. Octavo 21 cm 3/4 purple leather with purple cloth over boards. Title and gilt ruled borders on the spine. Red speckled text block edges. Cloth of boards faded and discolored. Rubbed along the joints and edges. Stitching periodically visible in the inside margins of the pages however bindings are strong. Preliminary and terminal leaves prominently foxed. Else pages occasionally lightly foxed. "J. Leighton Brewer St." binder's stamp on front pastedowns. Contemporary owner's neat inscription dated 1851 on title page of third book. Each book has the bookplate of British Statesman and Man of Letters Sir George Cornewall Lewis Baronet 1806-1863. He is most known for preserving neutrality in 1862 when the British cabinet debated intervention in the American Civil War. The author Anna Brownell Jameson 1794-1860 was an art historian who was also associated with literary criticism philosophy travel writing and feminism. These volumes are three books from her most famous work a monumental compendium of Christian Art. This compendium also included not present here "Legends of Madonna" 1852 and "The History of Our Lord" 1864 the last completed after her death in 1860 by her friend Elizabeth Rigby Lady Eastlake.
