2008ABE-1561037921638London Books 2008 First edition thus in a crisp first impression of this great thriller by the undeservedly neglected James Curtis. This intensely vernacular novel deserves to be up there with those of his contemporaries Graham Greene and Christopher Isherwood. Curtis like so many with his middle-class upbringing embraced leftist politics in the 30s and he began writing novels about criminals prostitutes and boxers almost as an attempt to understand or justify the underworld of crime. After the 1930s when he was as successful as his contemporaries he disappeared and today he is one of literature's neglected but very worthwhile authors. These novels are hugely expensive in their original first editions and this attractive new issue is a welcome chance to read this man again. Additionally this has a superb introduction from Jonathan Meades that places this superb novel in context. Protected jacket unread looking book utterly collectable if you can't afford the 1930s original!. Hardcover. As New/As New. London Books hardcover
