1972List916N.P. 1972. . Poster measuring 14 x 22 inches. Some marks a closed tear with tape repair edgewear and creasing very good minus overall. Very Good. After John Conyers' efforts to create a national holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. failed in congress days following his assassination the first celebrations of Martin Luther King's birthday began in 1969 when the newly created King Center led by Coretta Scott King organized events in King's honor on his birthday of January 15th. Observations of King's birthday followed in each subsequent year with the SCLC collecting three million signatures in support of a national holiday in 1971. Despite these efforts no bill honoring King would be signed into law until 1973 in Illinois. Offered here is a poster from one of these early celebrations in 1972. We can find no record of the artist - a J.L. - or similar surviving examples of this poster. unknown books

1926CNJL743Munich: Bremer Presse 1926-1928 1926. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Simons Anna. One of 365 copies folio size 5 volumes complete in German. An extraordinary publication by the Bremer Press of the "Martin Luther Bible". Translated by Luther directly from the Greek during his enforced sequestration in Wartburg Castle 1521-22 it was first published in 1545 and he continued to edit and refine his translation up to his death the following year. Translating directly from the Greek was a marked departure for the academics of the day who relied on the Latin Vulgate translation and used Latin for their studies with Greek seldom used or even taught.

Luther chose to translate from the Greek into the vernacular German language of the day making the scriptures accessible to everyday people and at the same time providing a vehicle for a more unified German language. The Bremer Press known for its interrelation of scholarship type design and book design has provided a version of the Luther Bible edited by Professor Carl von Kraus 1868-1952 Professor of German Philology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. n. b. above info from Wiki and Ransom.

___DESCRIPTION: Set of five volumes complete; Volume I: Die Bucher Mose; Volume II: Das Ander Teil des Alten Testaments; Volume III: Das Dritte Teil des Alten Testaments; Volume IV: Die Propheten; and Volume V: Das Neue Testament. 193126335Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Very Good-. c.1931. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket a decent enough copy moderately worn with some soiling to the bottom of the text block; there's also a weird bit of damage to the upper left corner of the rear pastedown where it appears that some previous owner had crudely cut away a bookseller's ticket unfortunately in a way that tore the cloth a bit and exposed about an inch of the top edge of the rear board adjacent to the spine the integrity of the binding however has not been compromised. An Irish-in-America family saga about a family who rose to success in the New York business world over the period from the 1850s to the early 1930s but whose dynasty is eventually brought low by intrafamily rifts and rivalries. Luther 1872-1951 was a prolific novelist and magazine-fiction writer; in addition to this straight novel he also collaborated with Ms. Ford on a couple of Los Angeles-set mystery tales. . 192615099Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Good. c.1926. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket reading copy shelfworn but intact; dust-soiling to top edge spotting on a few pages a bit of fraying to cloth at corners and spine ends damage to upper corner of rear pastedown where some lout apparently removed a bookseller's label with a razor blade causing some weakening to the binding at that point. Somewhat hard-to-find novel about a young energetic and honest city manager a WWI veteran who attempts to unseat the entrenched political machine in a suburb of New York City dubbed for purposes of this narrative "Suburbia"--could this be the first use of that term. It "doesn't pretend to be literature" wrote a contemporary critic but "the style is lively with better dialogue than is to be found in the average novel." Hanna 2252 .
